1001Tracklists Spotlight: Charmes Celebrates "On The Ground"

Today we’re celebrating with Charmes, who’s fresh off his latest tune “On The Ground”! Lovers of big basslines will rejoice, as Charmes’ new tune will light up your speakers right from the get go as he kicks off his big Spotlight Mix with the new release. Get ready for loads of IDs too, as he brings a mix of his favorite house music at the moment including tunes from Cloonee, DONT BLINK, Matroda, SIDEPIECE, and many more. Our interview highlights his work during the pandemic, continued growth of his label In Control Recordings, and steadfast dedication to the love of house music. Enjoy!

Werner, thanks so much for joining us today. We’re so excited to celebrate “On The Ground” and share your Spotlight Mix! Take us through the last few weeks – how has the build up to this special release been?
Hi guys, thanks for having me! Received so much great feedback for this new release from colleagues and tastemaker DJs! My brothers from the UK, James Hype & R3wire, jumped immediately on this one as they are the first to champion this song in their live streams. Also the support by living legend Pasquale Rotella means a lot – he’s one of the most innovative people in the dance scene in my opinion. Others that supported this release are: Sirius XM’s Liquid Todd, Sidney Samson, Bingo Players, Tommie Sunshine, Kryder & many more!

Looking closer at the production, what was the initial inspiration? How did you move from there to the final track that we hear today?
The bassline of course! Loving those big filthy (simple) basslines! The drop melody is a signature Charmes pattern that I programmed to a 4x4 tech house beat. Also used some familiar brass sounds that you may have heard used in my former releases. When the drop was finished I searched for vocals that complemented the heavy climax. But they had to be simple, sexy and easy to hear to keep the dynamic in this tune alive. Anyway, if you play this tune LOUD on a good audio system with a proper sub, you totally understand what i’m trying to accomplish!

How has it felt to release club music during the pandemic? Without a dancefloor to test your productions on, do you feel that you’ve changed your sound at all?
No, I haven't changed my sound, I stick to what I love to do most, releasing house music with filthy grooves and big basslines! Of course this is not the ideal situation to test my music, but I'm actually at this point that I release music from the heart and I don't care what works and what does not. See, music is emotion, some people will love it, some will hate it. But I’m not in this game to please everyone… or to break the Spotify streaming records. So my philosophy is to release music without any concessions and also not to wait on other labels to release my music.

I’ve created my own strategy, release plans and built a dedicated team who help me to accomplish this. On the other end there are plenty of new opportunities to promote your music. As a music entrepreneur you have to think in possibilities instead of restrictions.

You were able to get out a few weeks ago for your birthday celebration, which was loaded with special guests. How was the evening?
It was a great evening, the perfect timing, every artist showcased their new releases and was so happy to “play” again. Artists like Sidney Samson, Jennifer Cooke, Dante Klein, Michael Mendoza and many more all did their thing.

In the meantime, our government closed all festivals and clubs again here in Holland, because of a “new Covid outbreak,” so we enjoyed two weeks of clubbing to the fullest! Hopefully we will able to play in August again!

Looking closer at your Spotlight Mix, how did you approach creating a flow and how might this set compare to a Charmes live set currently?
I created this mix with a couple of cool IDs (which will come out very soon...) plus a bunch of new releases that I recently received from labels. On top of that, I added some dope mashups from rising star Wedamnz. In my opinion he is one of those new producer/DJs to keep an eye on!

There are not so many changes with this mix if you compare it with a live set. Though during live sets, I also play more “old” stuff and go back and forth.

Can you highlight three additional tracks or artists included in the Spotlight Mix and why they stand out?
Sidney Samson ft. Tara McDonald - “Get Over Here.” I’m chilling in Sidney’s studio often, always good vibes over there… suddenly he opened this project and played me this MONSTER tune! One of my favorites at the moment!

My little brother Awiin is on a roll lately! We created a cool collab together which you hear as an ID in this mix and I also dropped one of his solo ID tunes in this mix… more info soon!

Another great hard working producer is my brother Essentials, his steady house sound always puts a smile on my face! If you listen carefully, you will also spot a collab ID in this mix!

“On The Ground” was released on your own imprint. Tell us some more about how things are going with In Control and your upcoming plans and vision for the label.
My label In Control Recordings is all about good vibes, tastemaker music, fun and love for the process of actually creating and releasing house music from the heart! Receiving so much great music from upcoming and established artists that we keep dropping new content every week. I’m super proud of the artists involved and the support that we have received so far!

And as we head deeper into summer, what’s keeping you on track and motivated on a daily basis? Do you have any other big plans for this year that you can share?
Yes a lot! During all of the lockdowns I spoke to a lot of people in the music business, basically just to see if we can help each other in these crazy times! That made me also realise that there is more than only making music, traveling the world and doing shows.

So in the meantime I'm also working as a label consultant for several clients, partnered with online artist platform VIRPP to scout new talent and also spreading my knowledge at the famous Herman Brood Academy here in Holland.

While I'm busy with my own music, this is the perfect method to keep me inspired and motivated by helping others share the codes of our music business.
