SHWAY's Here To Stay

Vancouver based DJ & producer SHWAY has stormed into 2021 with his first releases, and we had a chat to uncover the details behind the music that he's kicked off the project with. His latest is a collaboration with Julianne Aurora titled "Peace," and he gives us the inside scoop about how the track came together.

Hey SHWAY, thanks for joining us today! Starting out, can you take us all the way back and tell us about how you got started with a career in music? Who were some of your early inspirations that led you down this path?
Thanks for having me! I got started in music by getting into drumming. I made it my goal to have every cymbal I could get my hands on and I played drums for almost ten years. Once I moved to the city, I couldn’t fit my drums in my apartment so I decided to trade them in for CDJs. Around this time I started listening to all of the golden era EDM and I was hooked instantly. Some of my biggest inspirations are Axwell, Tritonal, and Matisse & Sadko, being that they are all melody wizards and I really connect emotionally with their music.

What has the evolution of your career been like from when you just got started until now? What have been some of your highlights and milestones along the way?
My career started off by getting into a local DJ agency for weddings. It was a fun way to start off, but I knew that I wanted to play the music I liked in a scenario where people would come to see me play. I started playing college parties in Vancouver and worked my way up to a few residencies around town. My career highlights to date are the recent musical creations including "Peace" that you can expect to come your way ASAP!

While it's been a difficult past year and a half since the onset of Covid, what have been some of the positives that you've been able to draw from this period, musically and/or personally?
Covid has been really hard for a lot of people. One thing I didn’t realize was how much connecting with people meant to me. Being stuck at home was hard, but I made a commitment to myself to finish the Axtone Academy and start writing songs that I feel represent me as a person. That course really shaped my understanding on how to write, produce, mix, master and I’m still learning so much still today.

Let's jump right into your new track together with Julianne Aurora titled "Peace." How did the two of you come together on this one?
"Peace" was a song that I actually wrote very quickly. Once I had the melody down the rest of the song flowed very easily. I was going through a bit of a difficult time in my life and I wanted to express it in my music and not hold it in. Once I showed it around to some fellow producer friends I got connected with Julianne. She’s such an amazing singer and I feel her voice really captures the emotion that we portray in the song.

What was it like working on "Peace" and building the track around Julianne's vocal?
Well it was a lot of fun making the melody. The way I envision the melody is someone is calling out and someone is answering back, even if they aren’t here. We actually had the first demo of the song completely done before Julianne came to sing on it. I told her the vibe and she picked up on it right away and gave us the beautiful vocal that we now have on the track. Couldn’t have done this without her.

Earlier this year you released "Moment" as the first release under your SHWAY moniker. What made this the right track to start things off?
When I started writing "Moment," I was in a high place. I tried to recreate in my own way all of the progressive house tracks I’ve grown to love with my own little twist. The song is high energy and it gets people moving so I wanted to start my SHWAY project with a positive, uplifting message.

Do you have any other new music in the pipeline that you can tell us about?
Yes I have another track that I would love to put out this summer. This one is extremely special and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it. I’ve got a lot of other demos I’m working on so new music is on the way!

And lastly, as we look ahead, how does the rest of this year look for you? What has you excited and motivated?
The rest of the year looks extremely exciting as everything is starting to open back up. My goal is to get back to playing shows, but also have a focus on building my brand and to keep working and experimenting with what I can achieve in the studio. I have a really amazing team helping me push this forward, and seeing all of their hard work is inspiring. I won’t let them or myself down. SHWAY is here to Shtayyyy.
