Ruben de Ronde X Rodg Exclusive Mix
When it was announced that Ruben de Ronde and Rodg would be playing b2b at ASOT 800 Utrecht, we knew to expect something special, but we didn’t have any sense as to how special the set would be. The two Armada stalwarts prepared a whole album’s worth of material just for that occasion and unleashed an ID filled set. After their performance they announced their Togetherr album and the anticipation for their new music began growing uncontrollably! Finally last week after a few months of waiting the album was released and the guys crafted an Exclusive Mix to celebrate!
We love how the mix contains only your guys music! How’d you approach creating the right flow with the tracks?
Thank you! Well we produced the whole album keeping in mind that we wanted to play the records at the A State Of Trance 800 Utrecht Mainstage. So that kind of sets the right approach and aim for how the records should be working on the dance floor!
What has the build up towards the album release over the past couple of months been like for you guys?
Full of exciting moments. Of course first was the set at A State Of Trance in February, and after that we kept playing the records in our DJ sets and saw that they got more and more recognition by the crowd. Amazing to see. We’re both super stoked that the album is finally out there!
Can you pick out two tracks from the album and tell us about the production process that went into them? How did you go from the idea/sketch to the final version for these tracks?
The record with Genix, “Midnight Blue,” was quite an interesting collaboration. He sent us an idea for the break part that we really, really liked, but he wasn’t so sure about it himself. We proceeded with the rest of the track, including that break, and he liked the outcome so much that he was completely sold and sure about the break he made himself.
“Intergalactic” with Estiva was a funny one as well. Rodg worked with the parts that Estiva sent and placed the bassline a beat off in the arrangement… And that changed the whole feel of the record in a positive way, though it was a little bit different to what Estiva had in mind when sending the parts. Oops. Sorry ;-)
What are each of your favorite tracks from the album and why?
It’s hard to pick records for so many reasons. Favourite tracks could be the record with Ørjan Nilsen, as we’ve both been big fans of his music for years and look up to him a lot as a producer. We could name “Alone” with the psy bass sound, as we went completely out of our comfort zone on that one. Or maybe “Little Drummer”? Because we both have had great experiences playing that one out. So hard to pick favourites!
Lots of superstar collabs! Who’d you learn something particularly special from?
Ørjan Nilsen and his crazy melody making. Damn that guy is so good with that!
What’s been your favorite album track to play out live?
“Little Drummer” works very well on the dance floor! Definitely one of our favourites. Also “Pull A Lewie” always manages to set the right vibe when we play it at the beginning of a set. “Midnight Blue” goes completely off when we play it as well. Difficult to pick them out! We have a lot of records for different moments in a DJ set.
You guys are going to get to play Hï Ibiza this summer alongside Armin and stacked lineups. How’s the excitement level to head to that new super club?
Super excited. Have you guys seen pictures? It looks insanely good. That + Ibiza is going to be a golden combination. We’re beyond excited.
You’ve also got some huge festival dates – Ultra Europe and Tomorrowland for instance. How does the approach toward a major festival set like that change versus a club show?
Well festival DJ sets are more likely to have a shorter set time, for let’s say an hour, so we’re more picky on the records that we select. Still what we do on both festival and club shows is grabbing the vibe of the crowd and taking it from there. For every event, club, festival, and time that you’re playing, the crowd is different and needs a different approach.
