Jaxx & Vega 1001Tracklists 'The Tunnel LIVE' Exclusive Mix
Jaxx & Vega have been taking the big room EDM world by storm over the past several years. They’ve become key artists on labels like Smash The House and Rave Culture and most recently dropped an official remix for Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Armin van Buuren & Brennan Heart’s mega collaboration “Christmas Time.” With an arsenal of IDs and festival edits at their disposal, they step into the 1001Tracklists Exclusive Mix series with an insane live set recorded from Germany, in ‘The Tunnel’! Turn it up and get ready for the sounds of the Mainstage!
Marvin and Janis, thanks so much for joining us today! We’re so excited to share your Exclusive Mix today and take a closer look at your bright future! Could you start out by each talking a bit about your background in DJing and music production?
Each of us had our own paths which guided us into electronic dance music.
Marvin: Artists like Chuckie, Afrojack, Bassjackers & Tiësto had a big influence on me and they were the ones that got me thinking about DJing and producing. In 2010 the Dirty Dutch sound was where I made my first steps as an artist. I also started learning about producing by making hip hop & RnB before I went into EDM. In that regard I am actually 100% self-taught.
Janis: For me it was dubstep that got me into dance music. Back in 2010 I started to produce music and played my first shows in local clubs. At the end of 2012 it was the legendary Tomorrowland aftermovie that inspired me to switch genres.
Take us back to when you two first met or heard each other’s music. What led you guys to come together as a duo under Jaxx & Vega?
We met in 2014 on the internet actually. After we exchanged some tracks, we directly felt a connection and started working together on a few projects. Then we met a few times in the studio and played some German shows together. That was when we decided to form a duo and knew something big was coming up.
What are the sounds that Jaxx & Vega stand for today?
Our sound is mostly characterized by atmospheric, energetic synths and leads. We work a lot with chords and supersaws paired with some of our signature top leads. We’re always trying to develop and improve our sound with every production and that’s why we think big room will never disappear from festivals. While producing a track we always imagine how the track would work on a mainstage and ask ourselves: “Would we or other DJs play it, and would visitors enjoy it as well?”
For our DJ sets we always want to deliver the best experience for the fans. That’s why we believe in interacting a lot with the crowd and building unique sets which contain most of our own productions and mashups. It's also important for us to experiment with new music that we’ve produced or that we were sent by our producer friends. Our mission is to not stick to one genre in our sets, so it's absolutely possible that you’ll hear rock, harder styles or classic dance/pop songs which we turned into festival mixes – simply put, it’s everything that sounds good to us. We also never play the same set twice, so you always have a new experience.
Take us inside your head for your Exclusive Mix. How has the vibe recording sets at home compared to gigs for you? Do you feel like your track selection has been affected?
We miss live shows a lot! The feeling you get when the crowd reacts to a new track of yours or sings to some of your tracks is the best feeling in the world – nothing else can compare. The vibe in ‘The Tunnel’ which is located at the Bootshaus technicians’ storage was very unique. The guys built an insane lighting concept and we just had a lot of fun while recording this mix.
For this set we instantly came up with a concept! For the track selection we wanted to premiere a lot of our upcoming tracks and collaborations and bring the listeners an experience that's close to our live performances. It's a musical journey from the start of Jaxx & Vega until now.
Looking closer at your Exclusive Mix, what were three standout tracks included in the set and why?
There is definitely the “La Luna” ID everybody is asking us about. We get sooo many requests after every set, it’s absolutely insane. For us it’s very special, because of the hype around the track since it was premiered by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike at Tomorrowland 2019 and it just got so much amazing feedback
At the same time our collab with DVLM, Timmy Trumpet, Wolfpack and R3SPAWN, which is called “Kalinka” is still one of the tracks we’re most proud of. This old Russian melody just forces you to move your body!
Now it’s starting to get a bit tricky… we have so many upcoming releases, a great collab with ANG, one with Sandro Silva and more. And on the other hand, our releases like “Limitless,” “Run Away,” etc. brought us where we are. This one is for our fans to decide!
You guys have really become ingrained as part of Smash The House. Can you talk some more about your relationship with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and the label?
Working with these guys is great! It is a big honor for us to get such bright feedback from them regarding our tracks. When we first met there was immediately musical chemistry. They told us that they are big fans of our sound and we think tracks like “Kalinka” definitely show how successful we can perform together. Our latest releases like “Kalahari” or “Run Away“ got great support and we have a lot of potential bangers coming up with them and even other big names like Ummet Ozcan. Being part of the Home Alone Christmas album was an absolute honor, to see your name next to all those big and well-known artists is seriously something else. That vinyl has a special place in our studio. It is amazing to have such big partners who really support you and share your vision.
We’re sure you’re missing live shows just as much as we are. Thinking back, what were two of your favorite shows and why?
In 2019 we had a show in Bonn (Germany) which was called Rhein in Flammen. We had the headliner spot in front of 25,000 people. It. Was. Insane! People started pyro in the beginning of our intro, and they went crazy to every track we played. We had so much fun that we just continued to play a few more minutes because we never played a big fireworks show before. But we’ve also had great shows in Taiwan, Belgium, Austria, at The World Club Dome in Germany and many more. Can’t wait to have that again!
How have you been using your extra time at home over the past ten months? Do you have any insights to help maintain creativity and inspiration as an artist?
Sometimes it can be really frustrating to have a lack of creativity or inspiration. Whenever there is a problem, whether it is creativity or anything else like this we talk to our team and management and look for new ideas. What especially helps us the most in these difficult times is taking time away and spending time with the family, our girlfriends or friends. When you open your DAW and absolutely nothing comes to your mind, just turn off your PC and do something different. We have that a lot, so we just try to reset ourselves and get back to it with a fresh and focused mind.
And as we look ahead, what is coming on the immediate horizon for Jaxx & Vega, and what are two things that you hope to have accomplished by the end of the year?
There are a lot of things in the making, and we are currently talking to a potential partner which would definitely pave the way for an even crazier musical journey. With our management deal in 2020 we were already able to accomplish a lot of big steps, but one of our goals is definitely to release a lot of those tracks people have been craving… like “La Luna”! There’s also a cool collaboration with 789Ten coming up regarding an exclusive sample pack! While we are still in this whole lockdown situation, one of our biggest wishes would be to have a new schedule of shows for 2022 fixed at the end of this year. We get so many requests from fans that want to see us perform live… we would love to be there for them! Maybe you are going to see us at one of the top five festivals soon, who knows ;)
