Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano's Exclusive Mix
On the heels of a massive EDC Mexico Mainstage performance, we’re delighted to bring you an Exclusive Mix from Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano. The duo are celebrating their new collaboration “Shameless” together with Bruno Martini and for good reason! Having just passed two years since the birth of their label SONO, the talented Dutch duo continually find ways to push the boundaries with both their music and performances. Always holding true to their signature energy, “Shameless” is a perfect follow up to their previous collaboration with Bruno Martini & Marya, again a stunning vocal track. We got an inside look at the collaboration and much more in their interview, and also celebrated many of the standout SONO artists and upcoming releases in their Mix!
Sunnery, Ryan! Thanks for joining us on the Exclusive Mix today. How’s your year started?
Thanks for having us! This year started with a bang. We’ve done some very cool shows and worked on a lot of new music. We can’t wait to share it with you all!
You did a really special run of shows in Holland in January, so can you tell us some more about those and how they compared to your typical club/festival sets?
That was INSANE! It was quite a different experience than what we are used to. We played 11 shows with only the best Dutch artists. We had three rehearsal days because we played together with other artists, which was very cool to do. Normally when we play a show, we sometimes have a soundcheck, but usually, we’d just go on stage and play, no rehearsals or whatever. This way of working made it all very new to us, but we loved it. Every show was sold out and the energy of the crowd was amazing!
We’re excited to see you back working with Bruno Martini! Can you tell us some more about how you first met, your first track together “Savages,” and the lead up to “Shameless”?
We met initially while we were on tour and after seeing each other a couple of times and chilling after our sets we started talking about a collaboration. We really like Bruno’s music and think it matches great with our sound. After a few weeks, Bruno flew to Amsterdam to work with us in the studio and that is how “Savages” came to life. Right after “Savages” came out we started talking about a follow up and now here it is!
How did the “Shameless” production come together? Talk to us about the initial inspiration, working with the vocal, and final tweaks.
After the success of “Savages” we felt we had to do this again because we had so much fun working with Bruno and Mayra. So we went back into the studio with some setups and started working from there. We sent the track back and forth between us and Bruno until we were all happy with the sound. As always we tested the track in some of our sets to see the response of the crowd, made some small changes and now it’s finally finished!
To us “Shameless” definitely feels a bit clubbier than “Savages.” Do you guys feel the same? It seems like something you’ve probably been able to test live in your sets?
It feels a bit more clubbier than “Savages,” but for us “Shameless” isn’t necessarily a club track. Especially if you compare it to some of our other productions. We think “Shameless” works really well in both the club and at all of the upcoming festivals where we are playing. The crowd has been responding very well, so we’re excited to see what happens once the track is released.
Mayra again is the featured vocalist on your collaboration with Bruno. What do you like most about her voice and what makes it a good fit for your productions?
Mayra is super talented and really fun to work with. We just love the sound of her voice and when we talked to Bruno about working on another track, we all said that Mayra had to be on it too.
Looking at your Mix for a minute, can you highlight three tracks included and why they stand out?
Novak & Essentials - “Sexy Groove,” Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano ft. Kes Kross - “Coffee Shop” (Marc Volt Remix), and Yax.x - “Don’t Know Me.”
All three of these artists are incredibly talented and deliver a fresh new sound. We really believe in them and are excited to work with these guys in the future!!
You’ve just passed two years since your label SONO’s first release! How do you view the progression of the label over that time, and how would you like to see the next two years progress?
It’s been so much fun to work on SONO. We have so much freedom to release what we like and to work together with so many talented producers. We definitely grew into the process of running a label. We have a lot of new music lined up from both us and other artists so we can’t wait to release it all!
We’re just over a month out until Miami, so tell us some more about what your plans entail in the lead up to MMW and your Ultra Mainstage return!
We’re super excited to return to Miami. We just played Miami with our own Sexy By Nature concept last weekend and in March we return for Miami Music Week. It’s always so much fun to be in Miami at that time of the year because everybody is around. We’ll definitely pay some visits to all of the radio stations, pop up parties, go visit our friends’ shows and of course, we play Ultra on Sunday.
