Dutch duo The Him have seen a deserved rise in popularity and profile over the last several years through their acclaimed run of deep house productions. Their top notch Midnight Mixtapes have similarly gained them diehard supporters and are followed closely by many fans. Last week the guys released their 20th Midnight Mixtape and in honor of the milestone they compiled a special 64 track packed two hour show. We caught up with the guys to keep the celebration going.
You just hit your milestone 20th episode of your mixtape series – when you guys started with number one, did you think you would ever get here?
Yeah for sure!!! It’s hard to predict the future. We love to go with the flow and try to think without any restrictions. We just want to make awesome music and aim to reach mixtape 1000 and beyond :)!
How do you think your growth as artists over that time has paralleled the growth and continuation of the Mixtape series?
Over the last few years our musical style has evolved a lot. In our remixes, our originals and also in our live performance. We try to have the mixtapes reflect this as well!
Looking into this episode, you’ve gone with a longer episode showcasing all of your music. What led you guys to approach the episode like that?
It’s important to celebrate special occasions with something extra right! We thought that it would be cool to include all of the music we've made over the last few years in one mixtape. Kind of like a little history book in case you missed any of the earlier ones.
How did you approach organizing the mix and creating a flow?
We collected all of the music we've made so far and added the freshest releases from the last few weeks. Finding the right energy in a mix is sometimes hard so we start with adding all of the tracks to a playlist and seeing how it feels to make sure the energy flows well. Changing single tracks or sometimes blocks that work well together until it's perfect. After that we mix the whole thing.
Can you highlight three artists included in this Mixtape and what make them stand out to you?
1. Est1987 – we play his Stardust remix all the time live. We love it!
2. Nathan C – His remixes of The Weeknd and Ed Sheeran are awesome.
3. Pegboard Nerds – They will never let you down if you need a party on the dancefloor!
You guys are coming to the end of the Do You Even Miss Me tour. What has this tour been like?
It was fire! We played 25 shows in 50 days. And we still have four to go! We spent all of our off days writing new songs in New York, Nashville and Los Angeles. We can’t wait to be back in the studio!
Any new music or upcoming plans for the rest of 2017 that you can share with us?
We will be releasing a new single soon and working on two big pop remixes. We are aiming to release a new single every 6 weeks this year so we're pretty excited!
