Iqbal, thanks so much for joining us today! We’re really excited to share your Exclusive Mix with everyone! How’s your year been going so far?
Hey, thank you so much for the opportunity! I'm doing great! This year was kinda rough, but thankfully we can get through this!
Taking things back a bit, can you tell us a bit more about your background in music production and DJing? Who were some of your biggest inspirations and how has growing up in Indonesia influenced you?
I started producing as a tropical house producer years ago, but I've been a huge fan of dubstep since I started trying to DJ and trying to make dubstep as well! My inspiration in making music is Bring Me The Horizon. I'm a huge fan of their talents, persona, style, versatility – literally every single one of their works are just refreshing to hear. I feel like no matter where you’re from, you can make it if you work hard for it!
We’re now over one year without live shows for the majority of the electronic music industry. Has that had any effect on your sound?
Honestly coming from Indonesia, where we rarely got shows for dubstep (even EDM in general for my city) it doesn't really affect me that much because I never play any proper shows here. Hopefully I will soon though!.
What are the sounds that Papa Khan stands for today?
Papa Khan's sound stands for beautiful futuristic melodic vibes. Basically projecting all of my emotions and my vision into my work – just trying to express myself through my art!
Take us inside your head for your Exclusive Mix. How did you approach the mix and create a flow? How might the set compare to a set that you would play live?
I think this mix is different and original because I've put loads of original Papa Khan music into it and I'm really trying to showcase my work to people! My intention was to create a story with my flow and I'm trying to share my emotions with the listeners in this mix!
Looking closer at your Exclusive Mix, what were three stand out tracks included in the set and why?
I feel like some of my own releases in this mix definitely hit me a lot, especially in an emotional way. If I can pick the best three of this mix, it would be "Blame," "Save Yourself," and "I Got You."
What does it mean to you to be the only artist ever selected to release their own music on Marshmello’s Joytime Collective?
It means literally the whole world to me! It is such a huge honor to work with them and I'm excited to see what's in the future!
Can you pick one of the tracks released on Joytime Collective and tell us what makes it special to you?
I would say "Blossom." That track was dedicated to my father who died battling lung cancer. I grew up without him because he spent the rest of his life in prison since I was around 12 so it feels kinda sad to not be able to hang with him for the rest of my life. I know he's proud of me though and I'll make him even prouder. The reason why I chose the title "Blossom" is because I also wanted to dedicate this track as a new beginning and a new wave of the Papa Khan project itself. Just like a blossoming flower.
A few months ago you did your first merch drop ever! What did it feel like creating that first line and do you have any more plans for more merch drops in the future?
Yeah, it's amazing to see a lot of people wearing my merch and they love it! And yes! More cool stuff in the future ;)
And as we look ahead, what’s keeping you excited and motivated? Any other big plans for Papa Khan that you can tell us about?
Seeing so much support from my fans, friends, and family towards my project is one of my biggest motivations to continue making music and keep innovating with my sounds! It feels unreal to have a lot of support coming from a place where literally noone enjoys bass music. I’m super grateful to have some big plans in the future and I can't wait to show them to everyone!
