To celebrate their new release on Fedde Le Grand's Darklight Recordings, Lion and Clambake & Rav3era go b2b for a very special Spotlight Mix! Get ready for loads of IDs alongside big cuts from ACRAZE, Julian Jordan, Martin Garrix, RetroVision and Tommie Sunshine! Their interview highlights the trio’s respect for one another, work on “Lights Go,” future plans, and much more!
Lion, Clambake & Rav3era, thanks so much for joining us to celebrate your new collab “Lights Go”! The track caught our attention after Fedde Le Grand teased it in an October episode of Darklight Sessions. What has the build up to the release been like through your eyes?
Lion: Hi, thank you very much for inviting us. It’s been very nice and I am always glad to do new collaborations. Clambake & Rav3era are good producers. They have a special approach to music, which I really like and it's been a great pleasure to work with the guys for the second time.
Clambake & Rav3era: It was really interesting for us as well. Because as you know, Lion is a really talented producer and it was a pleasure for us to work with him again.
Take us back to when you first met or heard the other’s music. What was your impression?
Lion: I first heard the works of Clambake & Rav3era in 2019. Their releases on Skink and Ones To Watch Records impressed me with their ideas and cool groove. They were different from other musicians!
Clambake & Rav3era: The first contact we had was the idea that he sent us in 2019. This idea became the collaboration, “Can’t Feel My Face” back in 2019.
What brought you guys together to work on “Lights Go” and what made it the right track for a collab?
Lion: Earlier we already had “Can’t Feel My Face” so it was easy to work together on a follow up. In January of this year, the guys sent me a cool demo for “Lights Go” in which I saw a lot of potential. This track has our common style and I fell in love with the idea. Within a month, I finalized the demo that the guys sent.
Clambake & Rav3era: For us the initial idea behind “Lights Go” was to create a follow up track to our single “Bounce That” which also was released in 2020, and got really great support from amazing artists. And then as mentioned we contacted Lion to bring the track to the next level. And he absolutely did!
Looking closer at the track, can you each highlight your favorite element in the production?
Lion: I would especially highlight the drop. I really like leads and percussion, which give a clear dynamic and attack in the track. It is mesmerizing, and gives a punch in the club on a big soundsystem.
Clambake & Rav3era: In our opinion, the pre-drop of the second drop and the breakdown!
Turning our attention toward your Spotlight Mix, how did you approach this set and create a flow? How might the mix compare to a current live set of yours in a club?
Lion: The mix contains our best tracks and collaborations. In addition, we have included our new works that have not yet been released. We wanted to show the 1001Tracklists audience what we are working on. I love supporting new young artists and playing their music.
Clambake & Rav3era: The big difference is that in our live sets we work in more classics and we’re always trying to bring the energy to the crowd.
Looking closer at your music selection, can you each highlight two tracks included and why they stand out to you?
Lion: Of course, I will highlight this new work of ours with Clambake & Rav3era. I think this is an interesting sound for this style. I also really like Tony Romera - “MS69.” An unmistakable wild energy in that track!
Clambake & Rav3era: RetroVision – “In the Place.” We really like the stuff that RetroVision creates, always sick. And secondly, Martin Garrix & Julian Jordan feat. Tinie Tempah - “Diamonds.” Really amazing artists that made an amazing track together. It feels like a cinematic result!
For both of you, this release marks a return on Darklight Recordings. What has it been like working with Fedde and the team? What does releasing on Darklight mean to you?
Lion: For me this is the third release on the Darklight label. I love their team and approach to working with an artist. Fedde Le Grand's works were the first club tracks I heard back in school so it’s a great honor for me to release music on his label and to be part of this family.
Clambake & Rav3era: It’s an honor for us to work with Fedde Le Grand and the Darklight team. We’re very happy to release our second single there and hopefully more will follow!
Outside of collaborating with each other, who is someone else you hope to work with one day?
Lion: During my career I have worked with great artists such as Jewelz & Sparks, TWOLOUD, Tommie Sunshine and the legendary band Basic Element. For the future, I want to note Habstrakt, BROHUG, TV Noise, and Knock2. The style of these guys is close to mine, and they are very cool producers!
Clambake & Rav3era: Oh that’s a really difficult question. There are a lot! But basically we’re open to collaborate with anyone as long as the idea of the track appeals to us.
Reflecting on this past year, what have been some additional highlights for each of you?
Lion: The last two years have been especially fruitful for me. This year was no exception. For this year, I would highlight my work “Told You,” made in collaboration with Jewelz & Sparks. This release was supported by many top DJs and reached Top 3 on the Beatport Big Room chart. The second important work for me is the collaboration with the Basic Element group “I'll Never Let You Know.” It was an honor for me to work with a group of this caliber.
Clambake & Rav3era: Honestly, every release was special for us in a time without gigs. But if we had to choose a few highlights, we would say the two releases on Darklight stand out!
And as we look ahead, what’s keeping you excited and motivated on a daily basis? What are some goals you have in mind for 2022?
Lion: I like to wake up every day with the thought that today I have the opportunity to create new music. I am inspired by completely different things – it can be beautiful weather or any other pleasant moment in life. There are many plans for 2022, there will be even more new music and new labels!
Clambake & Rav3era: Our passion for music keeps us always motivated. That moment when you hear crazy new music from great artists and also that moment when you create something new. Our biggest goal is to play our first international gig outside of Switzerland. And as always to grow our community and reach new people with our music.
