ARTY is on fire. Since the launch of his ALPHA 9 alias one year ago at Ultra Music Festival, there’s been no slowing down the incredibly talented Russian producer. As you’ll read the new project has helped refocus and reinspire him and there’s no denying the beautiful output so far this year. From the uplifting and inspiring “Sunrise,” to his remix of Skrillex’s hit “Would You Ever,” to the just released ALPHA 9 remix of Above & Beyond’s “My Own Hymn,” the quality in each of his productions will blow you away. We’re delighted to have him join us with an Exclusive Mix highlighting all of those productions as well as what a current ARTY set is like – enjoy!
How did you approach your Exclusive Mix and how does the track selection compare to your club sets currently?
This Exclusive Mix is actually much closer to what I’ve been playing in my live sets recently. For the past few years while I’ve been doing my radio show, TogetherFM, there have been no boundaries with track selections; I basically played whatever I wanted. But it came to the point where I wanted to preview what my live set would sound like, and also showcase the direction I’m taking with music production overall, so this is what I’ve been trying to achieve with the Exclusive Mix.
Can you highlight three artists included and why you chose to include them?
Audien, Matisse & Sadko and DubVision are a few of my favorite artists; they’re making incredible music and have been my inspiration for many years. These guys are only getting better, so I’m always happy and excited to play their records, whether it’s a live set or radio mix.
You kicked off your year with the incredible “Sunrise.” Can you tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind the track? You seem so successful at evoking emotion and feeling with your music, so can you talk a little about that in the context of “Sunrise”?
“Sunrise” as a record is a turning point in my career. As silly it sounds, with this track I’m getting back to my roots, producing music that isn’t only emotional, but also uplifting, and a highlight in my live sets. Over the past few years I’ve produced all kinds of music, from indie/dance to pop, and it feels extremely refreshing to go back to one of my favorite genres and elevate it with beautiful and powerful vocals like in “Sunrise.”
April Bender has really nailed it with this vocal. What do you like most about her voice?
First of all, when I heard the first pass, her voice almost made me cry. And of course, the flow between vocals and the drop is something that I really like, it feels like both parts are natural extensions of each other and that’s what makes this song so special to me.
You’ve also just released two incredible remixes that we’d love to ask you about. Let’s start with the Arty remix of Skrillex & Poo Bear’s “Would You Ever” [free download] which you’ve really reinvented in your own trademark way. Where did the idea for that remix come from and how do you feel that you were able to make the track your own?
This remix was just pure inspiration based on the original song after listening on repeat. Then I thought, this would be great to make my own version and also fit in my live set. I didn’t really think of making this remix with my significant ARTY sound, it just happened naturally. Also, big thanks to Skrillex for giving me the stems for such a beautiful record.
The ALPHA 9 remix of Above & Beyond – “My Own Hymn” is sublime. What does remixing such a big record from their new album mean to you? Did you feel any sort of added pressure taking on such a big track?
There was definitely a lot more pressure than usual. Above & Beyond, Anjunabeats, and I have a long history starting back in 2010, and of course, I really wanted to make something special. Also, I think most of the pressure came from how incredible the original song is, and how much I wanted to keep this feeling. I assume that I achieved my goals, since Above & Beyond are playing this remix on their massive US tour right now.
It’s now been about one year since the relaunch of ALPHA 9 at Ultra last year. How do you feel the project has been going? How have you been able to maintain balance between the ARTY and ALPHA 9 projects and what does the future hold for each project?
Bringing back ALPHA 9 has been the best decision I’ve made in my career so far. Since ARTY and ALPHA 9 are equally important to me, I have to work twice as hard. And of course, having two projects keeps the studio and live shows really refreshing. It’s an inspiring feeling when you know that if you’re getting stuck with one of the projects, you can quickly switch to another.
2017 ended up being a year of ALPHA 9, but since this project helped me to reconsider a lot of things about where I want to take my ARTY music, this year in 2018 I will balance out both projects.
Are there any specific plans or notable events coming up in 2018 that have you particularly excited? Can you tell us anything about your work with Audien :) ?!
After a two year break, I’m really excited to be part of EDC – and other festivals that I can’t reveal yet – but this time as ALPHA 9, which is even more exciting, since it’s a relatively new project for a lot of fans.
Nate and I are finishing our collab at this very moment, and if there are no unforseen circumstances, it will see the light this year!
