MaRLo's Signature Performance At Transmission
We caught up with MaRLo just before his set at Transmission: 'The Lost Oracle' to get a sneak preview of the magic that was about to unfold. Though performing early in the night, he made us fully aware of the energy that was soon to come from his set. With a smile on his face, he held back giving us any information on his ID tracks, but we did discuss two of his recent tracks, "Leave My Hand" with Emma Chatt and "Join Us Now." Enjoy his standout performance from Transmission as you get to know MaRLo and the big year ahead for him.
What do you like about playing Transmission and here in Prague?
MaRLo: First of all, it’s a huge crowd that comes out here. The Czech Republic crowd is just so warm and welcoming. The Transmission production is insane. It’s a crazy experience. I’ve only done it once before last year and I’ve played another couple of festivals in the area.
What do you think tonight will be like for you compared to your first Transmission show?
MaRLo: I think it will be different. Last year I played the closing set so I played really hard, which was great, I just totally let loose. But this year I’m playing a little bit earlier and I’m excited about the opportunity to show a different side again.
Do you think with this set you’ll have to take it from a little bit slower and then pick the energy up?
MaRLo: No. I’m not playing a warmup set or anything. I’m playing my sound. If you look at my productions they are really broad as well. They go from vocal tracks that are 132 BPM all the way to 138 plus banging tracks. BPM-wise I may be a little bit slower, but energy wise it will be just as energetic - I don’t necessarily think BPM means energy anyways. With the faster stuff, it’s not necessarily jumping up and down energy, it’s more in yourself, sort of fast pace stuff so I’m hoping to create a different type of energy.
Any new music you are going to play tonight that you can talk about?
MaRLo: Yup! But I won’t say anything about it! Keep the people guessing!
Jumping into your recently released track, “Leave My Hand” with Emma Chatt, what was it like working with her?
MaRLo: It was awesome. She is up until now a fairly unknown girl, but I think that will change very soon. She’s a girl from Perth and I was blown away at a cover of Gareth Emery’s “You” that she did, so I contacted her and asked her if she had any original material. She sent me a few tracks and “Leave My Hand” really stood out so I spent some time coming up with a concept and melody and building the song around her vocal and I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Let’s talk about one more track, “Join Us Now.” What was the inspiration for this one?
MaRLo: I had a track called “Darkside” which was very well received and has a really cool video of a bunny rabbit, but it was really dark. I initially made it just for my own sets and wasn’t planning on releasing it, but as soon as the label heard it, they thought it was cool and should be released. “Join Us Now” is kind of a follow-up to that and it links into my own concert shows in Australia this year called “Altitude.” All of the shows sold-out and these were big capacity venues - 6,000 people per city. “Join Us Now” was sort of for those shows. ‘Join us now, come to the gig’ - it was sort of used for all of the promotional material as well.
Generally speaking, you work a lot with Armada Music. What do you like about working with them?
MaRLo: I’ve been with Armada for a while now. The cool thing about Armada is that all of those people that work there have become close friends of mine. They give me the freedom to make what I like, so it’s a good fit.
What does having the support of some of the bigger artists like Armin van Buuren mean to you?
MaRLo: It’s a very fast way to get exposure to a lot of people. I think it’s through the help of 1001tracklists as well, to be honest. Someone like Armin will play a track and people will go to the site and see what the track is and it gets your name out there more and more and is a good tool to build a fanbase quicker.
What does the rest of this year and beginning of next year hold for you?
MaRLo: This year has been absolutely phenomenal. I’ve been touring a lot and the rest of this year is no different with a lot of touring too. I’ve got Dreamstate in Los Angeles coming up really soon. But next year I have a baby arriving! He will be with us in March, so I’m sure that will be taking up a lot of my time. I will also be spending a lot of time in the studio, my other baby, as I’m sure I’ll be really inspired.
