Lucas & Steve Break Down Their Productions

Lucas & Steve have enjoyed a majorly successful 2016, highlighted by hit singles “Make It Right,” “Summer On You” - their massive collaboration with Sam Feldt - and big festival performances at Creamfields and Tomorrowland. During ADE we sat down with the Dutch duo to reflect on their year and their productions. Enjoy their most recent Skyline Sessions episode as the duo break down many of their own productions contained in the episode!

How did you guys pick the idea of using cities to base your radio show, Skyline Sessions?
Steven: I think that when we started touring across the world, we really wanted to see something of the country and the city we were playing in, and that's what we try and do in the radio show as well. We choose a city where we are going in the upcoming month and then highlight that city.

How do you guys pick the tracks?
Steven: We are always searching for new tracks and talents. For instance, Fadi & Klinko are two guys who are doing some great stuff at the moment. But also we try and mix in some of the big artists like Don Diablo and Tiësto and some Spinnin' promos, so we are trying to combine new talents with also some big names. We do receive a lot of promos which is okay because it's always good to have something new and fresh.

Let's jump into "Love On My Mind," which has been doing great. When you were making this track, did you think that so many other artists would pick it up?
Lucas: You actually never know, it's really hard to tell who is going to play your track. Our style can range between house music and EDM. It can be the rougher edge of house music, which is kind of what we aim at. And it can be a little more commercial, which makes it more accessible for a large range of artists, but you never really know. The support list is huge, it's crazy.

What was the inspiration for that track?
Lucas: Well of course, the vocals of Amanda Wilson on the Freemasons track "Love On My Mind." It's definitely one of our all time house music classics so we always had the idea in mind to do something with the vocal. We had this melody already that we thought fit the vocal. For the drop, we wanted to do something really energetic to get the crowd going. From there we just did what came to mind.

How about your edit of "Pjanoo" - where did that come from?
Steven: We made that especially for Tomorrowland and Creamfields. We played at the Lost Frequencies & Friends stage at Tomorrowland and the Mainstage at Creamfields. Those were two of the biggest stages we have ever played, so we thought that it would be nice to have something really exclusive and we made our bootleg, edit, whatever you want to say, of that classic track. For me, "Pjanoo" is my ultimate classic. The best dance track in the history of dance music, and we just thought it would be cool to have something in the 2016 version.

Are you guys still big Eric Prydz fans?
Steven: Yeah, absolutely. He's one of the greatests. He's one of my biggest inspirations. I really respect the way he can go in all directions with his music.

Lucas: I mean, the guy has been doing so many great things from his first track until now and does so many different things from Cirez D to Pryda and it's all epic.

What was it like working with Sam Feldt on "Summer On You"?
Steven: Yeah, that song is doing very well at the moment. We worked on "Summer On You" with Sam, Lucas and I in the studio. We thought it would be good to have a club version and a radio version. The club edit has worked really well at festivals.

Lucas: And the radio version has been great for people to chill and a bigger commercial audience to listen to. It makes it a bit easier for a wide range of people to understand, but working together with Sam was really nice.

Steven: He's a good friend of ours too. When you are in the studio with someone like him, it's not working, it's just fun. You have a beer, then you make music, which is awesome.

Was there a show you attended as a fan that made you want to be a producer/DJ?
Lucas: Well the thing is, we are too young. We've been producing for more than ten years already. I'm 25 and Steve's 24. We have seen shows that we've derived so much inspiration from, but we were already producing. Seeing Axwell /\ Ingrosso perform is always awesome. The guys really know how to tear off the roof.
