Thanks for joining us today to wrap up a massive year! 2019 has been filled with loads of releases and big shows in new territories! What have been some of the stand out moments for you?
Thank you guys for having me, it's a massive honor! 2019 really has been quite a ride. It was packed with so many special moments and memories, it's almost impossible to rank them... I'll always remember the year as my first "performing year." I'd say that it all kind of kicked off with my Bootshaus show in January. It was my 3rd or 4th gig ever and it just blew me away completely. My first festival show at Ultra Korea was truly special too.
Your newest release “Hot 1” is together with Tony Romera. Do you remember the first time that you met Tony or heard his music? What was your impression? What brought you guys together for this track?
I heard Tony's stuff for the first time about 5-6 years ago when he released on Guru Recordings and on Protocol. I remember loving his heavy electro approach so much back then. He’s made an incredible journey since; I'm incredibly proud of how far he has come since I have kind of grown up in dance music with him being a part of it, which is crazy. It's quite inspiring to work with someone who has continuously grown and delivered over the course of so many years. We connected over my tune "Skanker" about two years ago. He loved the sound and so we decided to get together and work on something.
What’s your favorite element in the production? How do you feel you’ve found a nice blend between your sounds?
What I love about the track is that it's just fun. It makes you wanna jump around and laugh while doing it; it's the perfect blend between explosive rage and joyful ecstasy. That's exactly what it should be about.
The release marked your return to BITE THIS! What do you like about working with JAUZ and his label?
Indeed! It's definitely one of my favorite labels to work with, the team and the work they do is fantastic. I am often associated with JAUZ and his sound so releasing on his label kind of feels right too. Sam really gets my idea of writing music and what I want to bring across, so it's quite special for me to have the chance to release it with him. Big up my g, you're the best <3
Your release “Run Away” on Welcome Records was one of the standouts from the compilation for us! Tell us some more about that release.
Thank you! That's great to hear. Being German and Polish I kind of grew up with hard dance and hardcore, so it's always been a big part of my productions too. I guess that's where my faster 4x4 stuff stems from as well. I love the fact that the sound came back big time this year and I think Kayzo is one of the main drivers of that movement. Therefore Welcome Records felt like the right place for the tune. We're actually not done yet either, there is more to come!
Take us inside your DJ sets at the moment. How are you approaching them and how would you describe your style?
Uhh, interesting question... You see, I'm not really a DJ to start with, I've always been the nerdy producer. I just love writing and listening to music I resonate with; any genre, any style. And I love sharing that music with people around me, kind of curating stuff that they might have not heard yet. When I perform I just try to embrace that notion and give people a glimpse of my musical world, which could, for example, mean that I'll blast Slipknot in your face halfway through my set and then transition into a Jon Hopkins breakdown after. I guess that makes my sets a bit unorthodox and maybe even inaccessible to some people. It's who I am though and I don't want to change that. I feel like people increasingly appreciate being surprised.
Looking at your Spotlight Mix can you highlight three tracks or artists included and why they stand out to you?
I'm gonna go with Chase & Status - “Program” to start with. They are the epitome of UK underground music to me and the fact that they sonically went right back to the roots of jungle with this record and nail it so well just gives me goosebumps.
Next up I wanna say “Come Together” by Chaos In The CBD. House just doesn't get much better than this and I fucking love their music so much... I had to include them here.
Last but not least I think I'd like to highlight KARYYN's “EVER.” I discovered her recently and quite frankly it shocks me that she isn't significantly bigger than she is. A part of me hopes she will never be though, I like the fact that probably no one will know the song before listening to the mix. I made a little techno edit for it to be playable in the club alongside heavier dance music.
As we look ahead to 2020, are there any other plans, collabs, or new music that you can tell us about? What’s one goal you’re hoping to achieve?
Next year is going to be a gamechanger I believe. This year kind of set the path for what is to come; it was about making those first experiences on the road and releasing with large record labels, testing the waters and so on. I know myself and where I want to be much clearer now, which was not the case a year ago. Next year it's about taking all that knowledge and elevating everything by a mile. I've got a couple of big collaborations coming up, shows in completely new territories, larger projects like EPs, fresh merchandise and exciting artistic but non-musical collaborations. I honestly just can not wait for it all to roll out eventually, it's going to be incredible.
