Michael Mendoza Charging Into ADE 2019
Michael Mendoza is heading into Amsterdam Dance Event 2019 with a renewed and refreshed energy. The Amsterdam native is coming off a big summer in which his “Piece Of Your Heart” remix became a festival favorite, and with a new team around him in place, all the pieces are lining up for the next step of his career. With fresh music out and on the way like “Hey DJ” on Zero Cool, as well as another epic Michael Mendoza & Chuckie event upcoming on Saturday at The Butcher Amsterdam, there was loads to talk about!
ADE is almost upon us and it’s looking like another big year for you in your hometown. Let’s take a look first at your event together with Chuckie. What do you guys have in store for Saturday night?
This Michael Mendoza & Chuckie event will be a very special one. Being held at one of the most exclusive locations in the city of Amsterdam we decided to organize a dinner and dance event which starts at 6pm and will transcend in a high end clubbing night from 23:00 till late. Amongst ourselves and house legend Kurd Maverick we invited some of our DJ friends and rising stars. Of course there will be some other special guest appearances so it’s promised to get crazy.
The lineup is stacked – highlight a few of the artists you’re excited to have on board and why they stand out.
Kurd Maverick is a boss. There’s nothing more to add.
Artists like Thomas Newson, Charmes and Double Pleasure are rising more and more on an international level with high profile gigs and quality releases. It’s always good to see artists grow with their sound and become more and more successful. I play a lot of their music.
BJones is one of the revelations of this year. Amazing skills and appearance. The world will definitely hear more from her.
If people are interested in what I would personally recommend as the rising stars of the country, please keep a close eye on Afrotura, Laela Muriel and Chanca. These three are really part of the future of DJs Amsterdam (Holland) has to offer when it comes to house music in it’s purest form combined with afro and or tech(no) sounds.
Last but not least DJ’s Vito Mendez, Grimix and Chase have a lot to offer when it comes to waving the big room/EDM banner.
You and Chuckie have quite a history and some notorious b2bs. Can you highlight a few of your favorite memories together?
We’ve known each other for so long and did so many (spontaneous) b2b’s I can’t remember them all. Especially because some of them got way too wild ;)
One I will never forget is the b2b session at a packed 02 Brixton Academy in London. With our own DJ booth containing 6 CDJ’s and a mixer we took on a 5k strong crowd. Though we we were fully focussed on our set and had almost no verbal communication, the smiles and looks during our set said it all. We were enjoying every minute and pushed each other to another level track after track.
What can you tell us about your other plans during ADE?
It’s a very busy week for me apart from doing my own event. Of course there are meetings and studio sessions scheduled. I’m playing every day at a different venue from Wednesday till Sunday and will do some interviews and live sets for some of the prominent radio stations.
Other than the years before I don’t have a lot of time to party myself or check out my colleagues/ friends but I’m very grateful to be fully booked with six gigs so far and busy with making my own moves.
You’re just released a new record on MOTi’s Zero Cool label. Talk to us about “Hey DJ” – what was the initial inspiration for the track and how did it progress into the final product we hear today?
“Hey DJ” is a track that was made some time ago already. When MOTi heard it he expressesd the same enthusiasm I had when I finished it and that convinced me to sign it to Zero Cool. He literaly told me the same thing I wanted the crowd to feel listening to this uplifting deep house track with a sexy and catchy vocal that repeatedly serves as a moment of attention from where the track keeps growing into something more than what was heard before. The vibe is very much compared to MK’s “Look Right Through” remixes combined.. But of course with a Mendoza swing in it.
You dropped your own remix of “Piece Of Your Heart” that picked up some massive support this summer. With huge festival plays by guys like Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano and Jonas Blue at Tomorrowland, how do you feel you’ve given the Meduza hit new life?
From the moment I heard the original I fell in love with it and it took only four hrs to create the remix. Sometimes it just happens like that. Like in my mind the track was destined to sound like this. I knew when I played the melody with the classic house organ sound that it would turn into something original and special. Just like the vocal, the track had to be something you’ve heard before and would be familiar with, but in a good way.
I was very happy with the support especially because it did not only come from trusted names. The moment Jonas Blue reached out to get his hands on it I was amazed and proud at the same time. When he dropped the track in his Tomorrowland mainstage set my Instagram exploded with DMs from DJs and music lovers from all over the world asking when it would come out and if they could receive a promo ;)
The consistent support from a lot of my other colleagues even made some people mistake my remix for the original I remember one time someone even asking if my DJ name was Michael Meduza, haha. Jokes side, I’m really happy with how the track got picked up and proud to have created a remix for these great artists. Their music is amazing.
Earlier this summer, you switched up your management a bit. Talk to us about that change and how you feel its enabling you to take a new step forward with your career.
I started out fresh with a whole new team from management, PR to (music) production. I’m really happy to finally work with people I find the best at doing their job but also being connected with me on a personal level. We share the same values and standards and I can really feel that everyone around me is dedicated on really making my career-plans a success, so I’m very thankful. I can focus on what I reckon to be good at and trust the people around me doing their best on making sure everything else is taken care of. Especially in these days of ever growing competition in our industry and (pressing) social media developments is good to have a team that keeps you grounded and sharp whether it’s business or personal.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Really looking forward to share all the new music that’s gonna be released in the near future and some major collaborations with A list artists are in the making which you guys be updated about soon through my socials.
