Oliver Heldens Career Reflection

In anticipation of the special two year anniversary Heldeep Radio, Oliver took some time to talk to us about his quick rise to stardom, HI-LO alias, and more! Be sure to leave your track suggestions for the special two year anniversary show on his Facebook or Instagram!

What has it been like achieving this level of success at such a young age?
Well my life has been upside down since I released Gecko, and everything has been going great since that moment. I’m enjoying every moment of it! It’s hard to keep up with all the crazy stuff happening around me, but luckily I have my family and a great team around me that supports me every step of the way.

Were there any shows that you went to as a fan that stand out to you?
Before I even started producing, I got introduced to house music at a party at my high school. The headliner was Hardwell and he blew my mind immediately. After the show I started checking out more DJs and eventually got inspired by all these DJs. So these moments inspired me to get more into the producing side of electronic music. All these shows together really stood out to me, and they turned out to be life-changing moments.

Heldeep Radio: How do you select tracks?
The tracks for Heldeep Radio are selected by myself and I mostly look for tracks that I personally like a lot. Sometimes this can be a mainstream artist, but I also listen to a lot of tracks that I get through email from upcoming DJs. It really depends on what is currently popular and what I’m really into.

How much time goes into each week?
I spend a lot of time listening to music, so if that counts, I probably spend the whole week to find good tracks. Whenever I hear a good track, I’ll keep it in mind for the upcoming Heldeep Radio show.

Do you use 1001tracklists? If so, how?
Yes, I use 1001tracklists a lot actually! Whenever I’m struggling to find the name of a track I heard, I just look on 1001tracklists to find out more. I also think it’s great to see how up to date the website actually is. For example, within hours the tracks on a live set can all be named by fans who gathered information. So in my opinion, it’s a great tool for DJs and for fans.

When did you decide to create the HI-LO alias?
I always wanted to create music apart from the sound I usually create, so I had a lot of tracks finished that I couldn’t use as Oliver Heldens. That was the moment I came up with HI-LO. I’m really happy with the decision and I didn’t expect it to go so well. But it’s a lot of fun having an alias!

How do you split your time between Oliver and HI-LO productions?
I can’t really say. It’s about inspiration, so sometimes I work weeks in a row on new Oliver Heldens music and all of a sudden I have some good inspiration for a HI-LO song and I’ll be in the studio working on that. I have two collabs coming up with Chocolate Puma, one as Oliver Heldens and one as HI-LO, so I’m super exited about that.

What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not focusing on your career?
Whenever I have a day off, I like to hang out with my friends and play games or just watch movies. I recently watched Zoolander and I really liked that movie - I think it’s one of my favorites!

What is it like to have your own label (Heldeep)?
Being able to have my own label is really something I’m very happy about. I feel like I can contribute to the dance music scene by discovering new talents. I hope that I inspire others to produce music and really chase their dreams, but it’s great to know that I can help them a bit.

Any up and comers that we should watch out for?
I just released a new Heldeep DJ Tools EP on Heldeep Records. It features tracks form Mr. Belt & Wezol featuring Shermanology, Bougenvilla and Out of Cookies, and Vato Gonzalez. You should keep an eye on all of them!

Any favorite people to collaborate with?
I love the collab I did with Tiësto recently on Wombass. It was so cool being in the studio with him and to experience what it’s like to produce with him. Right now my new track Space Sheep with Chocolate Puma is out. I love hanging out with them and our production sounds create something completely new.

What track are you most proud of?
I think I have to say Gecko. It all started in my bedroom and the whole process of getting it signed to Musical Freedom and it being an ID was really exciting. It was received so well. I couldn’t have ever dreamed that all of this would come out of it!

Where do you see yourself five years from now?
It’s hard to say where I see myself within five years from now because every step in my career has been huge. I recently created my own label, create music under another alias, and I had my own bus tour through North America. I just hope to make more people happy with my music, and I am very excited to see what new sound will be created in the future.
