Frédérik, thanks so much for joining us today. We’re so excited to celebrate your Exclusive Mix with all of these IDs and your latest single “SLIME ZONE”! Let’s take it back a bit first though. What was the response like through your eyes to the EP that you released in March?
I’m really excited as well! Thank you so much for having me today. The first SLIME TIME EP got received really well in my perspective. Maybe they totally hated it lol, but when I played it at all of my shows people were going nuts! Every song had its momentum and it was so recognizable from anything else I’d play that the crowd would definitely know it was me.
When did you decide to start working on the new EP and how does it build from the first?
To be honest, I was working on my second EP as soon as the first one got released. My process of work goes off all of the song demos I did in the last few months and the ones that I like the most. Then I dive deep into them and put in the work to finalize each track. I definitely have a longer and bigger process because I’m so picky when it comes to releasing music and I want to make sure the songs are 100% SNAILS sound design and in my world. This EP built off the first one as being the weirdest sound design ever. This is the roots of everything I do so I enjoy trying the most unique drops I could. “FROGKIND,” “GASTROPODZ” and “BRAINFARTS” all have their core roots in the SNAILS sound.
Since the first EP, we’ve seen live shows come back at an exciting rate. Did this have any effect on the music you chose for the release? What has it felt like to have a dance floor and crowd to test your productions on again?
YES YES and YES!! This is for sure the most exciting thing that happened this year with shows coming back. It is such an indescribable feeling to see the live reaction of some drops and having the confirmation that YES this is a banger lol. Honestly that was my process for deciding which songs will go in the upcoming EP.
Can you pick one of the tracks on the first SLIME TIME EP and give us a closer look at the production? What was the initial inspiration and how did you move from there to the final track that we hear today?
I’d love to take “GASTROPODZ” as an example. I always do music every day and work on “drops” as I call them – small demos of sound design. The one that makes me have a bass face goes to step two of the process where I go deeper – layering basses, finding cool melodic elements, working on percussions, drums and building the construction of the song itself into three different drops. After that I try to find a unique sample or line for the song to have a story about. In this case, I was with my girlfriend the last four months in the United States so we were just having fun saying some funny phrases and the “GASTROPODZ” idea came alive through that. I LOVE playing with any SNAILS element because it’s straight up in my world.
Let’s turn our attention to your Exclusive Mix. How did you approach creating a flow and how might this set compare to a current live set of yours?
For the Exclusive Mix, I’ve been doing a series called “SNAILED IT” for years and I wanted to start fresh with all of this new music and I felt that it would be ideal timing for SLIME TIME. I approach the mix like a live set, so yes it is built around energy and flow. But for this being the start of a new series my goal is to really showcase all of the new music that I’ve been working on, plus a few songs from artists I love. I am really proud of this one because as much as I do lots of music, not a lot gets released because I’m so picky. A mixtape for me is like a portfolio – it’s there to showcase your art, what you do and what you can produce also. Often I use this process to see which songs get the most reactions in the comments, and then I can go ahead and see directly the songs that could be considered for the next EP or future release. I am 100% about listening to my fans and almost letting them decide what I should release because in the end they are the ones who are going to listen to my music. Better off releasing stuff they’re going to like!
Can you highlight three additional artists included in the Exclusive Mix and why they stand out?
RATED R – He had an EP on my label, SLUGZ Music, and it is such a banger that I had to include an unreleased song of his! He is already an amazing friend of mine so it goes without saying that he should be included in this mix.
GUILT CHIP – He is an insane sound designer from OKC and we became friends through Discord and sound designing. I have such a big amount of respect for him doing his thing and being so unique. The song included is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what he is sitting on right now.
I love pushing the new generation of artists and for that, I found this song from this artist called FORAMIC. The song is called “Lockdown” and it couldn’t be more spot on to be like a slimy bassline haha. I play it at every show and it goes off so much. I think so many artists deserve the spotlight and it is the least i can do on my behalf to use this mix to do it as best as i could.
What has it felt like to return on tour following the pandemic? How do you think the crowd energy compares from 2019 to now?
It is the best feeling in the world. Seriously it’s what we, artists, fuel on, the crowd energy! By seeing the fans going crazy and enjoying the music I definitely feel they were extremely ready for shows to be back!
Your imprint SLUGZ Music has continued to impress with its releases through this time. Tell us some more about how things are going with the label through your own eyes and your upcoming plans.
The goal of SLUGZ has always been to showcase artists that I relate to, or that I love. We released RATED R’s EP which became massive and a big banger in the dubstep world. For me the goal is to see upcoming artists shine with their music and all the hard work they put in. The SLUGZ platform will always be there to push the new generation of artists, and for future plans, we have some amazing music upcoming as unique and original as what we previously released. I’m really excited to share these new artists to the world! You might even hear some of them in the mix ;)
And as we head deeper into summer, what’s keeping you on track and motivated on a daily basis? Do you have any other big plans for this year that you can share?
I recently started working out more and more, and with a clear mind brings an even more healthy life. My approach is to use the energy I get from the workout in my music. I also look forward to all the shows coming up in the next month so I can play all this new music for the people! Another thing is definitely my friends and family, I get inspired by their energy so much.
