MDL Beast Festival Recap
MDL Beast Festival debuted in Saudi Arabia one week ago to the delight of an unprecedented gathering of over 400,000 attendees. Taking place December 19th, 20th, and 21st in Riyadh, this year’s edition saw international headliners and homegrown Saudi talent grace five unique stages. With an ambitious and attention grabbing plan, MDL Beast paired its global headlining acts in unique back to back sets on its Mainstage. With Tiësto, Martin Garrix, David Guetta, R3HAB, Afrojack, Sebastian Ingrosso, and more taking the decks, there were endless highlights to break down from the weekend! Check out some of our favorite sets below, as we dive into new music, unforgettable moments, and more!
Tiësto b2b Martin Garrix
Closing out the Mainstage on Day 1 to a massive reception was none other than Tiësto & Martin Garrix. Both artists are on the cutting edge of EDM with their own productions and their respective labels, Musical Freedom and STMPD, which have turned out some of the biggest club records of the last five years. Their sets were filled with those tracks as well as their own classics much to the delight of the crowd. You could feel the duo’s passion, energy, and embrace of the moment during their b2b set with a highlight moment coming when they played their collaboration, “The Only Way Is Up.” Other standout moments included a first play of SWACQ’s new remix for Martin Garrix’s single “Used To Love” and a crowd singalong feel good moment during their mashup of Avicii’s “Waiting For Love” with Galantis’s “No Money.”
Following their solo sets on Day 2, David Guetta and Steve Aoki closed out The Big Beast stage with an electric b2b set. Their set was a roller coaster ride filled with some of their own hits, new IDs, and crowd pleasing vocals. Guetta continued to spread his new sound dropping his massive MORTEN collaborations, “Never Be Alone” and “Bombardment,” while Aoki brought out some of his biggest collaborations including tracks with Quintino, Linkin Park, ALOK, and Afrojack to light up the crowd. There may not be two more fitting tracks to close out the Mainstage of a debut electronic music festival than what the perennial heavyweights played. Steve Aoki’s remix of “Pursuit Of Happiness” into David Guetta & Showtek’s anthem “BAD” brought the house down on an incredible set.
One of the most popular artists in the Middle East, R3HAB delivered multiple highlight performances during MDL Beast Festival. His b2b set with Afrojack was an outpouring of love, as the two artists wore ear to ear grins throughout the entire set. During his solo performance, it was beautiful to see the way he brought different cultures together with his music. Premiering new music with Middle East singers and stars Amir Diab and Mohamed Hamaki, he’s sewn himself into the music scene in the region for years to come and is paving the way for new cross culture and genre blending collaborations!
Closing Day 3 and the entire festival was none other than Sebastian Ingrosso and Salvatore Ganacci. Ingrosso left nothing to be desired with his solo set as he brought out decade defining originals and edits from his Axwell /\ Ingrosso and Swedish House Mafia projects. As those groups have closed so many festival mainstages across the world with those tracks, it felt right to have Ingrosso perform them for the Saudi Arabian crowd too. Certified as one of, if not, the most entertaining stage performers in the electronic music world, Salvatore Ganacci was at it again in Riyadh. With his quick mixing, crowd engagement, and dance moves, the crowd couldn’t help but dance, smile, and get enthralled with his fun, feel good set. Together the Swedes closed off an incredible three days at MDL Beast with signature music and performances that left festival goers with a full heart.
