Dannic's Exclusive Mix
Dannic has been on an absolute tear in 2018 with an outpouring of his own diverse productions, the steady growth of his label Fonk Recordings, and a massive touring schedule. Since signing to Spinnin’ Records, we’ve even seen him turn things up another notch with the productions and his latest release “Falling In Love (SOS)” is more evidence of their massive success. To celebrate that track and a very special Tomorrowland Weekend 2 appearance, Dannic joined us for an in-depth interview and Exclusive Mix!
Hey Daan, thanks for joining us today! How’s your summer been going thus far?
It’s been great, thanks! Festival season is underway and I just released my latest Spinnin’ single, so I’m excited to just keep playing for the fans with all of the new music I’ve released this year – next up: Tomorrowland!
We’re here celebrating “Falling In Love (SOS),” a track which held down the #1 Trending spot on 1001 for quite some time! Talk to us about the inspiration – we can definitely feel some more old school and summer house vibes!
For sure! It was really inspired by the feeling that love can conquer even the darkest moments and save us all – that’s why we put the SOS part in there. I wanted to still bring that classic house vibe with a modern Dannic twist. That is one of my favourite parts of producing, taking influence and paying homage with an individual style and stamp to create something totally fresh.
You’ve been working with a lot of big vocalists – INNA, Coco Star, and now Polina Griffith – for many of your recent more radio-friendly singles, can you talk to us about what makes a good vocal for your crossover sound?
It completely depends on what I’m going for – with “Coco’s Miracle,” Coco’s vocal was the real “star” of the show and Fedde and I didn’t want to overshadow that. With “Falling In Love (SOS),” again, the vocal really elevates my production work to another level than if it had been stand-alone. I think a good relationship and really working in harmony (as well as some killer notes and melodies!) with and from a vocalist is important for me.
Together with LoaX, you really brought “Stay” into the club and festivals in a big way. Can you talk about crafting that remix and making a DJ friendly version for your own sets?
We did that because the original version of “Stay” was very much for a wider-reaching audience, with that more radio-friendly sound. Both fans and other DJs really loved the vocal, but with this remix we added a heavier, big room beat with all these rising synths and booming bass to really bring the party to the festivals, like you said!
This year has seen you release music at a really nice and consistent pace – something we know your fans are loving! Can you talk about keeping that pace and output going and what to expect from you in the future? How have things been working out since you signed exclusively to Spinnin’?
It’s been amazing to sign to Spinnin’ – the team over there is amazing and the label is really one of the best in the world – so to be a part of that on such a great level feels so good! I’m still going to be releasing on my own label Fonk Recordings and also continuing to work with some core artists and signees, that is super important for me, but I honestly feel like I’m releasing some of the best music I have in years right now, and the support I’ve been getting from the fans both old and new is so great.
What’s next for Fonk? You had three really, really strong last releases in “Bring Di Fire,” “Animal Pop,” and “NRG,” so how will you build from there? Any plans for ADE this year that you may be able to share with readers?
Thanks for the kind words, I’m glad you’re enjoying our releases! Our main plan is quality over quantity which is why we really try to focus on helping artists come through the scene. More exciting releases coming very soon and for ADE, we always have an amazing label showcase. Last year’s sold out and felt like one big family party!
We also hope the Hardwell collaboration is on the way and we’d be remiss if we didn’t ask about it. Anything that you can tell us there?
Well, we’ll just have to wait and see, won’t we ;)
You’re playing on the V Sessions Stage this year at Tomorrowland! How’s the excitement for this year’s edition, anything special planned for that set?
For sure! Tomorrowland is always one of – if not the – best events in any artist’s calendar across the whole year! V Sessions will be exciting, it’s a stage I’ve not played yet but has a really great lineup curated by Yves V with guys like Florian Picasso also playing. A lot of special TL edits as always and looking forward to previewing some bits and pieces, I’m still working on it!
You can catch Dannic on the V Sessions stage this Friday, July 27th from 3:30 - 4:30 and find his latest track “Falling In Love (SOS)” on your platform of choice today!
