Jauz's Genre Defying Music
Genre blending is a core tenant to Jauz and has been critical to his rise as one of the most sought after acts in dance music. We caught up with Jauz at Ultra Singapore to talk about his explorations into new genres of music and his current inspirations.
Yesterday trap was on the live stage, today it’s on the mainstage, what’s it like seeing that genre of music grow around the world and here in Singapore?
It’s pretty crazy. Obviously people know me for my more house-y kind of music, but I do everything. I’ve always been a fan of the heavier, more high energy music, so to see it not only getting bigger here but also in Thailand, China, Korea...it’s really cool to see and I’m really excited about it.
Your motto is ‘Music Has No Boundaries.’ What style do you want to explore next?
There’s a lot of different things that I’ve been playing around with. I’ve been writing some stuff that’s more progressive and melodic because that’s one of the only places I really haven’t gone with my music. Also more, I don’t want to say commercial, but more pop-y and vocal driven. That’s always been my thing: challenging myself to do things that I normally wouldn’t do and things that previously scared me. That’s why I started making the deeper kind of house music. That’s how I feel about the more pop-y and vocal driven music. I’m honestly having a lot of fun doing it, so we’ll see what happens.
Who’s your biggest inspiration right now?
Oh man, there’s so many guys killing it right now. There’s so many young dudes, like Slushii - he’s a genius. Crankdat, if you haven’t heard of him, is one of the dopest producers out there right now. These kids, Sunday Service, they’re like my little homies. Both them and Crankdat, they’re doing every kind of music, really going no genres, and just killing it with everything they do. I could talk about it forever; the scene right now is so gnarly and there’s so much good music, I just have to keep up.
Any new upcoming releases?
Nothing I can talk about yet, but I promise there’s a lot coming!
