Crunkz Celebrates His Breathtaking Exclusive Mix At Reichsburg Cochem

If you follow the Top Overall Tracklists charts on 1001Tracklists, you’ve no doubt come across mixes from German DJ/producer Crunkz. Having already grown his YouTube subscribers to over 580,000 loyal fans, he continually delivers fresh mixes, blending fan fan favorite tracks with unheard gems. Together we teamed up to take things to a whole new level with his Exclusive Mix, a spectacular live set recorded from a German Imperial Castle! Turn it up and go full screen for the breathtaking set from Reichsburg Cochem and read on for a closer look at the world of Crunkz!
What makes a video set stand out to you nowadays and what elements are you bringing into each of your sets?
It's not easy to be honest. Especially since Covid started, there was a flood of live sets. So it's quite hard to stand out. When I plan my live sets, it's all about the track selection and the transitions. I try to keep the listener's attention by creating special edits and putting in tracks that they haven't heard before. Besides that, my sets are usually not longer than 30 minutes, which makes it easier for me to keep the energy level very high throughout the entire set.
Where did the idea to film at the Imperial Castle in Cochem come from? And how did you turn that vision into reality?
My parents and I visited Reichsburg in Cochem when I was a kid. It was such a cool experience, so when my manager came up with the idea to film a set there, I was definitely down for it. Out of the three episodes so far, it is definitely my favourite location. Such an eye catcher!
Take us inside the music from this episode. What are three stand out tracks included, and why?
First one is “Synthetic Blues” by Kasablanca. Those guys are just crazy. Their productions are on another level and “Synthetic Blues” is a perfect example of that.
Second one is the DubVision Bootleg of “Lifetime.” Like everyone else, I was super hyped when SHM finally released new music. The original song has such a great vibe and DubVision turned it into a festival banger.
Third one is “Peace Of Mind” by Drove. I'm a big fan of Drove. I fell in love with their style. Still have their EP on repeat – it's so good!
What effect has not playing live shows over the past 18 months had on your sound as an artist? Where is the Crunkz sound in 2021, and what’s the progression been like to get here today?
Not playing any shows was very sad at first, but it also gave me the opportunity to take the time to think about the next step for me as an artist. Since the beginning of 2021, I shifted my style away from progressive and future bounce into a deeper direction. After I finished “Black & White,“ which was my last future bounce release, I was not really satisfied with that genre anymore. So then I spent a lot of time messing around in the studio, but without thinking too much, I was just having fun. Out of nowhere, a friend of mine sent me the vocals from “Different” by Leo. I remember checking the stems for the first time, it was a game changer for me and I immediately had a vision for my next musical chapter. I'm super happy with how it turned out and can't wait to show all of the upcoming music!
The phrase ‘Never Stop’ has particular significance to you, so can you explain some more about that?
It's my motto. If you want to make it as a DJ/producer there are so many things that you have to do. Our business is super tough, the competition is very high. I force myself everyday to give more than 100% but sometimes you don’t get any credit for it, you experience a lot of failure, and this can be frustrating. But when I have my downs, I always say to myself “Never Stop“ because I think if you give everything and if you are very passionate about a thing, you can reach everything you want.
Can you tell us some more about the story behind your YouTube channel? How have you been able to grow such an engaged audience?
I’m hearing that question a lot. But there is no crazy story behind it. Since I started my YouTube channel back in 2011, I was constantly uploading mixes and live sets, and somehow a lot of them went viral and viewers turned into fans and followers. I had so much fun creating those mixes and I still have fun today, but I never had a real plan to build such a big audience – it just happened, and I’m very thankful for it.
Reflecting for another moment on your career, what are some achievements that you are most proud of? What are some goals that you still want to achieve one day?
Two big achievements are definitely the release on Hardwell's label Revealed Recordings in 2018, which has always been a dream for me, and the support from Tiësto, who played a mashup of mine at his shows and on his podcast. Hearing him saying my name in his podcast was such a crazy moment! Of course, I have the dream to tour around the world and have millions of dedicated fans, but If we speak about goals, my main goal is to make a living out of music. It doesn’t sound special, but if you can live off something you love, you’ve accomplished everything.
For any up & coming producers, DJs, or just YouTube mixers, what pieces of advice would you want to share with them?
It should be fun for you in general. If you are not passionate about it, don’t do it. Nowadays, everybody is talking about achieving something, but as I speak for my case, I achieved a lot of things without thinking too much about it, I just had fun doing what I love. But especially in our business it takes a lot of time, so be patient, work very hard, and don’t copy others. Good things will come then for sure!
And as we look ahead, how are you maintaining inspiration and creativity on a daily basis? What does your fall look like?
When it comes to inspiration, it mainly happens outside of the studio. If I force myself to get into the studio and to make a “banger,” most of the time nothing happens. So doing other things like meeting friends or just watching a movie can bring a lot of inspiration. And if you do not feel inspired, take a break! It can definitely solve the lack of inspiration and creativity! Besides that I am very much looking forward to the upcoming months. There will be some live shows again which is very exciting as well as many songwriting sessions, so be prepared for a lot of new Crunkz music!
