RetroVision's Breakthrough Summer: Exclusive Mix
RetroVision is in the midst of his biggest summer ever and we’re delighted to have him on board with his Exclusive Mix! Arguably no producer has seen his music played more this festival season, with his originals on Hexagon and Musical Freedom as well as official remixes for Laidback Luke, Yellow Claw, Galantis, and Timmy Trumpet racking up the support on mainstages worldwide! Read on to learn more about his trademark sound, debut Tomorrowland performance, and exclusive signing to Hexagon management and Ace Agency as we celebrate the summer of RetroVision!
Mathieu, thanks so much for joining us today! It’s been a landmark summer for you and your music, with your productions getting played every week at festivals around the world! Talk to us about some of the massive support that your music has been receiving. Whose support or which plays have been the most impactful to you?
Hey! I think one of the most noticeable plays is from Don Diablo. He's literally playing at least one of my tracks in every set, and it’s been that way for more than a year now! Also Alan Walker has been playing my track "Get Down" since the very first version and he's still playing it in EVERY gig!
You were also able to accomplish a dream this year with your debut Tomorrowland appearance on the Hexagon Stage at Tomorrowland [full tracklist]. Talk us through that day and your feelings, pre-set, during the set, as well as after with all of the Hexagon artists in attendance.
It was probably the best day of my whole career. I was quite stressed, but also super excited to play there for the first time. I've been dreaming of that moment for years – really I can remember in the bus on the way to school daydreaming about playing a festival like this. All of the people were super nice, and everyone had so much fun during the Hexagon All Stars show and we also managed to visit the festival a bit!
Last question on the touring front – what have been some of your other favorite countries that you visited this year?
I absolutely love Japan and Korea! The fans there are super involved! I’ve also loved going to Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. I visited a lot of countries already especially during my June tour which was an amazing first tour experience! (Video recap coming really soon!)
Turning our focus to your productions, talk to us some more about developing your own signature RetroVision sound that is so approachable for other DJs.
I'm trying to make music which is melodic, but also has that "club/festival" sound so that it can get played by the others and yet it's still listenable at home and in the car. I love to listen to music in my car so I'm trying to make music that I can enjoy with friends while we're going somewhere =)
Can you highlight one of your 2019 released productions and tell us some more about what makes it special?
I think "We Like To Party" is my favourite track that I released this year. It gets such crazy reactions when I play it in my own shows! I’m super happy that I could share it with everyone!
There are some big RetroVision IDs out there right now – what insights can you tell us about some of your upcoming music?
There is a LOT of upcoming music! I'm always playing a lot of my IDs (even if most of them don’t even get released) at my gigs because I feel like it's the main reason that I would play live – to give people exclusive music that they can only hear during a show. Otherwise I would feel like I'm simply a Spotify playlist playing music randomly.
After signing with Hexagon management earlier this year you took another big step in your career by signing with Ace Agency this summer. What does that milestone mean to you?
It's really a game-changer! Now all of my bookings are well organised. I have a team with me to help at all times and I’m no longer super stressed about verifying everything, which allows me to focus more on making music.
And lastly, looking at your Exclusive Mix, what are three tracks that you included which you feel are particularly stand out, and why?
First, there is a rework of Janee's track "Out Of Time" we did together which I played to end my set at Tomorrowland. This one is full of lovely vibes and I'm super happy if we can release it, more info soon!
Second would be my flip of Landis - “Nobody Like You" which I just reworked and I'm going to release it on my YouTube channel as it’s been in such high demand from fans!
Third would be my collab with Dirty Palm, and this one is really special because it's pretty much two years old, but it might finally get released! Also more info soon on this track, but I’ve got good news :)
