Sultan + Shepard Discuss New Music
On the heels of their performance at the Armada Invites during ADE, we sat down with Sultan + Shepard to reflect on their latest releases and upcoming music. Following up on their massive collab, “No Good,” the guys talk about their relationship and future collaboration with Fedde Le Grand. They also dive into their new track, “Honey Come Back,” as premiered in their Armada Invites set.
What was it like playing at the Armada Invites?
Super cool, really intimate and a fun vibe. Very cool too because the whole Armada staff was there hearing the records that they’ve signed [laughs], which is awesome. Really good people here.
For you, what does ADE week represent each year?
We’ve been coming here for five years. A lot of it is hanging out and putting faces to names, catching up with people who are in Europe and DJ friends that you don’t get to see as much in the US. It’s also about checking out the scene here, which is sort of a portal into the European scene. Everyone is here and throwing parties so there’s a lot to check out.
Tonight, you’re playing at Fedde Le Grande’s party. What does that mean to you?
The first time that we came to Amsterdam was because Fedde invited us to his party. His parties are always really, really fun. The last few years he’s done more of a techier, housier vibe which is cool. The venue is awesome, it’s like an old school which is wild.
Do you think you guys will ever work together again on a track?
Yeah, we actually started something recently. We’re working on it, we just haven’t had much time.
Let’s talk about your latest Armada track, “Samba Sixteen.” Where did you guys come up with this track?
It’s just kind of a fun bootleg that we cleared. When I was 16 and living in France, it was a huge record. This year we were in a car and kept hearing the melody and couldn’t figure out what it was. We couldn’t remember the name of it for weeks, until we finally remembered and decided that we should redo it.
At the end of your Armada Invites set, you premiered a new song.
Yeah, “Honey Come Back.” That’s a song that we did a while ago and cleared the sample. We’ve kind of been sitting on it, but it’s going to come out soon on Armada.
In your set you dropped the Breathe Carolina remix of “Love Me Crazy.” What makes you go to that one in your sets?
It has the energy. The original wasn’t really meant to be a club record, but more of a song.
Based off tonight’s set, it seems like you love female vocals?!
We like male vocals too! But it’s true, I played a lot of female vocals today. It’s just about the song, really. But most vocals are female vocals in general.
What else is going on for the rest of this year for you guys?
We have “Honey Come Back” and then we also have four or five tracks that are ready to go, so those will be released over the coming months. We also have an EP that will be released at the beginning of next year. Then we’ll do more and then we’ll do another EP.
