Marshmello's "Back In Time" Exclusive Mix
Fresh off headlining the UEFA Champions League Final Opening Ceremony we’re celebrating with Marshmello! As he gears up for the release of his new album, we’re thrilled to be spotlighting the recently released “Back In Time.” It’s a mega collaboration out now on Astralwerks with another dance music heavyweight Carnage. Read on to get an inside look at how they came to work together after bonding over a common love of festival trap music, as well as Mello’s diverse production talents, and plans for the return of live shows!
Mello, thanks so much for joining us today! We’re stoked to celebrate your new single and loaded Exclusive Mix! Take us back in time first – when did you first hear Carnage’s music or meet him? What was your impression?
I'd heard of Carnage way back in the day. Back when 'festival trap' was really big and I was really into it. Really into the energy. The whole style, I think it was the "Spaceman” Remix he made. Yeah, it was Hardwell’s song and he made a 'festival trap' remix of it. And then after that I went to see him perform live. That was pretty much the first time I had really heard of Carnage and then we met over the years of just playing shows and being in the scene together.
What led you guys to come together to work on “Back In Time”?
I forget who hit each other up first, but something happened where we were on Facetime, and we were like "Yo we gotta do a song together." And he sent me this idea for "Back In Time." And then I ran with it and then sent it back to him and he ran with it and vice versa... and we just kept going and going. And we ended up with the final track "Back In Time."
How does “Back In Time” fit into your vision for Marshmello’s sound in electronic music for the future? Do you have any plans to bring out any heavier tracks again like “Crusade”?
Honestly, the Marshmello sound you know kind of evolves and then sometimes devolves, goes back to the old sound and then newer and vice versa. But “Back In Time” was just like what I think is good music. You know, I like to make a lot of genres of music. With this new album, I tried to just keep a lot of hip hop drums in it and stuff like that and I also have heavier tracks, like my song "Crusade" with SVDDEN DEATH. I love making and working on songs like that as well. So, I'll definitely be releasing more like "Crusade."
Your skills as a hip hop producer have garnered loads more of deserved attention in the past two years. Can you compare and contrast your production approach for hip hop vs. electronic music?
With producing hip hop I've been blessed enough to be taken under the wing of the legendary hip hop producer Southside, who is part of the production group 808 Mafia. And you know, I've been working on hip hop a lot with him. I’ve learned a lot from him. And so, then that's when I kind of started producing my own hip hop by myself. With this new album, I wanted the influence of a lot of hip hop drums, and I think listening through, you can hear that. And then there's some other songs like house songs and stuff. But there's a few tracks in there that I strictly did, just hip hop drums.
You just had the chance to headline the UEFA Champions League Final opening ceremony. What was that experience like?
You know, headlining the UEFA Champions League Final is super... I can't believe I'm saying it… it's super, super crazy. I love soccer and I'm just super stoked and super excited and super grateful for them reaching out to me and asking me to headline this. It was the craziest performance and craziest experience I've ever had for any kind of performance. And I'm just super grateful! Super thankful!
We’re seeing live shows come back across the US. What effect has seeing their return had on you? Can you share anything about your plans for returning to club and festival shows?
Seeing all of these live shows come back makes me super excited. You know, it's been a while since I've played a show. Personally for me, the last time I played a show was February (of 2020), and maybe a festival was around New Year's two years ago. So, you know, I'm headlining Lollapalooza this year, and I'm super excited to get back into that festival atmosphere. And I'm playing clubs as well again. And it's exciting. You know, I'm just super excited.
