Quinten, Gregor, thanks so much for joining us today and we’re stoked to be together today celebrating an outstanding live set! Even without a crowd, we’re sure that the moment getting behind the CDJs must’ve been special. What did it feel like?
Hi guys, thanks for having us again. So glad to share another Exclusive Mix with you. Due to all of the Covid-restrictions as well as Gregor and I living in two different countries, we decided that only one of us would jump behind the decks. This time it was Quinten, but hopefully we’ll be able to play together again this summer. Getting back into a 'club environment' felt great. We prepared a lot of unreleased music for this set and can’t wait for people to finally hear what we’ve been up to over lockdown. We really hope shows and some kind of 'normal' life will be back soon for all of us.
Tell us some more about the location for this set, turning the idea into reality and some of the challenges of getting set up.
No challenges at all! Our friend Fred came up with this cool location called The Wharf in Cologne and honestly we haven't had such fun in ages. Driving there, getting dinner, playing the set – it almost felt like a real show haha. The recording team did a great job as you can see in the final video. If you want to check them out go to:

You loaded the set with big tracks! Can you pick three tracks included and tell us some more about what makes each special to you?
Only three? You’re making this hard for us haha.
Well, let’s start with our brand new single “Open Up” together with our good friend and talented vocalist Nikisha Reyes. We think she absolutely killed the vocal on this track and created a really special vibe on this record. The blend between her soulful vocals and our bass heavy and futuristic production is what makes this one of our favourite tunes. We also made a special VIP version which you can hear on the second drop ;)
As the second track we’d say our brand new remix for Mick Mazoo. Mick made a cover version of Billie Eilish’s massive hit “Everything I Wanted” together with Ni/Co. Our remix will be out on April 5th on Actuation. We really can’t wait for the release since it shows a completely different sound as the one we’re known for. The track has kind of a dark vibe so it’s a pretty huge contrast compared to our own productions.
Third place goes to our bootleg (or remix?? haha) of Tiesto’s “The Business.” Last week we were talking about the set and we thought we should include this tune. Then we noticed there is a remix competition going on, grabbed the stems and made this in two days. we love it, it’s so sick. On the first drop we went halftime before going completely nuts on the second one with the dnb rhythms. Really really curious what people will think about this one and can’t wait to play this on a big system with a real crowd.
Last week you kicked off the launch of your new label Backster FX. What made “Open Up” the right track to start things off?
Yeah finally. We had this idea of our own label for almost two years now. Over lockdown we made a lot of music and wanted to have our own home for it. We’re still going to release on other labels in the future, but it’s always nice to have a place where you can release stuff anytime. To make “Open Up” the first release was quite easy. The track sounded very musical to us, a fresh and unique twist on drum & bass. We both loved it and thought: let’s gooo, let’s try it and see what happens.
What are your plans for the label moving forward? Can we expect regular releases from Dux n Bass? You both have extensive experience running other labels, so will we also see you release music from other artists?
We’ve planned music on Backster FX for the rest of the year. We’re so happy that from now on we’ll be able to show new music almost every month. And yes, we’re definitely interested in releasing music from other artists, too. Can be anything – if a track is dope, everything’s possible.
How do you see yourselves balance your time between Dux n Bass, Backster FX, and your respective other projects moving forward?
No idea, haha. For now we’re working on new music everyday, promotion plans, etc. Lockdown helps a lot though. There’s so much time and we’re really happy that we’ve spent it to build on our project and the label these past months.
Building from the last question, how have you adjusted your goals for the Dux n Bass project? What are two things you hope to accomplish before 2021 is over?
We believe drum & bass deserves the same recognition as other genres in EDM. It’s so versatile. The energy and the vibes are just something else. If you caught the vibe with drum & bass once, you’ll never want to let it go. For Dux, our main goal is to combine the power, energy and the vibe of drum & bass with all of the other great styles and influences which electronic music has to offer nowadays. Although our project mainly focuses on dnb we want it to be more than 'only' that, you know? Not sure if this is something you can accomplish in a year – pretty sure this is something that we want to build and maintain.
Something more realistic for this year could be touring in Australia and New Zealand. Most of our fans are from Down Under, so we hope to play a tour over there sometime very soon. We’ve never been there before so it would be very exciting.
Outside of music, what else have you each been up to over the past year? Any new hobbies or highlights?
Well honestly, we’ve been making music nonstop and haven’t spent this much time in the studio in ages. Lockdown really had a positive impact on our creativity and work rate. But besides that we’ve started to work out more, Gregor got back to playing the piano daily and Quinten got into photoshop. You can expect quite some memes this year on our socials haha.
And as we turn towards warmer times and look ahead at spring, what has you excited?
In 2019 Gregor was travelling in the south of Europe and met this amazingly talented singer Mokina at a surf lodge. They sat down and had a great session on top of a beat idea we had created earlier with our good friend and partner Mr. T. This demo became the start of this song. Back home we went on with it, and even though it took a long time to finish, it's almost ready for release. We think it's the perfect mix between uptempo dance music and the singer/songwriter vibe she has. Hopefully a future surfer's anthem.
