Walden's Spectacular Return
We are proud to welcome Australian-born DJ/producer Walden as he makes his return to the scene after many years. His latest release, “Gotten” with Pete K, is the first single on Third Party’s Release Deep imprint, a new label exploring the deeper end of progressive music. Read on to discover more about Walden’s roots, what inspires him, and what’s next for the multi-talented musical maestro!
Hi Walden, thanks for joining us today! It’s been a while since we’ve heard from you, so how’s your summer going so far?
Thanks for having me! The summer has been amazing. Currently in Stockholm studying game design at FutureGames and we are now on break, so it has been great spending some time relaxing with friends and working on music.
For someone who hasn’t heard your music or is unfamiliar with your background, how would you describe your music?
I would describe it as emotional and melodic mixed with a nice dose of progressive house beats!
Let’s jump into your latest release “Gotten” with Pete K on Third Party’s new Release Deep imprint, making it the first track to launch the label. How did the two of you come to work together?
I was introduced to Pete K through one of my managers, Gabriel. Pete's music resonated with me and so we started discussing about doing a collaboration. After that we swapped ideas until we found the right one, and that's how “Gotten” was born!
As one of the few remaining producers upholding a true progressive sound, talk to us about your roots and background as a producer. What influences you to stay true to your musical identity?
Funnily enough, my roots stem from outside of electronica. I used to listen to a lot of orchestral and jazz pieces as a kid and I would say that my love of melodies and some of the 'emotions' found in progressive house stem from that.
I was exposed to a lot of different stuff as a kid, but the main quality that I'm always searching for is authenticity. Whilst I understand that the music industry is a business, I think that it's important to try and sell something that you actually believe in. If you can do that, people will sense it in what you create and will get a lot of value out of it. That's the line of thinking that has kept me from moving on to other styles when they became popular, at least as far as my Walden project was concerned. I think I'd rather pursue a different career path than produce 'Walden' music that doesn't come from the heart.
Can you name three artists that currently inspire your productions and three artists you’d really like to work with in the studio?
Hm only three? I can name so many haha. Well, here's five artists who are really having an impact on me right now: Jerome Isma-Ae, Dirty South, Yotto, Sebastian Leger, and CamelPhat. I would love to work with all of them.
And lastly, is there anything that you’re excited about in the upcoming months that you’d like to tell our readers about?
Tough question! There is a lot going on, but nothing that I can really confirm right now. What I can say though is that I am always working on new music and trying to find ways to improve and evolve my sound. So stay tuned, because you may be hearing more from me in the near future :)
