Deniz Koyu's Exclusive Mix

Deniz Koyu has been on a roll with his productions in 2020. After first putting his classic drive onto Gryffin’s hit song “Body Back” while on official remix duties, he then returned to his roots with the “Tung” sound for his Magnificence collab... and that’s just the start! With his highly anticipated Nicky Romero collaboration “Destiny” due out soon, there was no better time to celebrate with his Exclusive Mix!

Hey Deniz, thanks for joining us! For those who are unfamiliar with your sound, how would you best describe it?
I would describe my sound to be a mix of bouncy electro club songs with simple but catchy riffs, to melodic progressive EDM songs that feel uplifting melancholic.

You’ve got loads of new music on the way, including another highly anticipated Nicky Romero collaboration! Tell us about your relationship with Nicky over the years and how the two of you first got acquainted.
Nick and I have been friends for a long time now. I think the first time I ever met him was in 2012 when we played a show together at a club close to my hometown in Germany. Since then we’ve always stayed in touch, and in 2015 he came over to my studio where we started to discuss ideas for a collab. It took a while till we had the right song idea, which finally resulted in our first collab called “Paradise” in 2018. What connects us is our taste in music, plus we’re both total supercar geeks!

Your recent collaboration with Magnificence “Feel It” builds on the classic Deniz Koyu “Tung” sound we’ve all come to love! How did that collaboration come together?
I became a big fan of Magnificence the first time I heard their EP on Axtone in 2018, so I hit them up on Instagram and we started talking. We met up at ADE in that year and later started a studio session via Skype. We had the idea to make a song that catches the vibe of some of my old classics like “Tung” and “Bong” and combine that with the banging tribal beats that are a big part of the Magnificence signature sound. That fusion happened to work out really well and we are both very happy with the result!

You also recently remixed Gryffin's track “Body Back.” How'd the chance for that remix come about? What elements of the original did you want to preserve and how do you feel you've made the track your own?
In this case it was Gryffin’s management who reached out to my management and asked if I was up for remixing his new song “Body Back.” I knew I would have a lot of fun remixing it because I loved the vocal and the emotional guitar melodies. Those were the main elements I knew I wanted to preserve, but I wanted to give the guitars a more anthemic feel and add that typical Deniz Koyu drive to the drop with energetic buildups to make it more club compatible. That is what most people know my remixes for and Gryffin’s great musicality was a perfect input to make it happen.

Looking closer at your Exclusive Mix, can you highlight three tracks included and why they stand out?
My first personal highlight is “Peace Love Happiness” by Calvin Harris, which stands out for me with its really well crafted old school house vibe and its catchy riff.

Second highlight for me is “Tokyo” by 3LAU which I love for how it brings back memories I have of some old trance classics while managing to sound fresh at the same time.

Last but not least my third highlight is my new collab with Nicky Romero called “Destiny,” which is a very special song for me that we’ve worked on for quite some time. It’s emotional and very uplifting and I hope it can help to make people out there feel a little happier during these tough times right now!

As the current situation of the music industry and the world continues to escalate, what’s your perspective on how to tackle the forthcoming months as an artist/producer?
For me personally I’m seeing this time of self isolation as a chance to catch up with a lot of work in the studio, with little pressure from the outside and a lot more freedom to experiment, learn new things and develop my sound. I have finished a lot of songs in the past few weeks that I didn’t get to while being on tour heavily, and my release schedule is now set until winter this year, which I’m very happy about. So I’m trying to look at the positive side of things. I do feel very sorry though for artists and producers who are now getting into financial trouble due to the loss of shows and hope that this crisis will soon find its end and we can go back to our normal lives!

What has you excited as we look past April? Do you have any particular goals that you’re hoping to accomplish in 2020?
I have many more things in the pipeline for 2020 that are getting me excited yes, including new visuals for my shows, lots of music and also some projects outside of the music business. One of them is my first own fashion label that I just recently founded and you should start to see a first collection after the summer. And at the top of my list of private achievements for 2020 is getting married to my fiancée, which we’ll hopefully get to do soon once the quarantine time is over!
