TUJAMO's Exclusive Mix
Today we’re excited to be joined today by one of the hottest producers in dance music! TUJAMO has been on an absolute tear in 2019, dropping massive remixes like his take on Tiësto’s hit “Grapevine,” huge originals such as “Candy On The Dancefloor,” and impressive remixes of his own tracks like Timmy Trumpet’s energetic revamp of “Drop That Low.” No slouch on the tour dates, TUJAMO has been touring heavily in Asia and has a massive summer schedule lined up as well. With so much going off, there was loads to discuss in our interview, and TUJAMO delivered the goods in an edit-filled Exclusive Mix!
Matt, thanks for joining us today! You’ve come out of the gates flying in 2019 and dropped an onslaught of impressive releases! Talk to us about the start to the year through your eyes and backstory to the impressive catalog that you’ve put out already.
Great to be here guys. Glad you like my releases, thank you! The year has started very well for me indeed, I'm very happy about it. The backstory is quite simple: diving into the music and working hard in the studio to make all those singles, collabs and remixes happen :-)
One of those big tunes is your remix of “Grapevine.” What did it mean to you to get to do a remix of one of Tiësto’s biggest tracks in recent years? Did you feel any extra pressure making your remix with the original being such a hit?
It‘s always a pleasure to contribute a remix for an artist with a name like Tiësto. You want to deliver and it‘s not always easy to nail it. The pressure actually was not the issue for me in this case. See, if I like the original and I feel the elements that I need to adapt to the TUJAMO sound, it‘s much easier to be creative. The more you can tweak the mixdown and general production quality which sometimes is the bigger challenge.
You’ve also released two other remixes this year, one for HUGEL and another for Tom Novy. Can you pick one of the two and tell us some more about your take?
Let's pick the HUGEL one. "WTF" is such a summer song and it has quite a pop character. So I took all of those parts and put some more power into it, some heavier sounds that suit a club or festival stage a bit more. At the same time I kept that sunny feeling, that was important for me. I'm really happy with the result, hope you are too :-)
On the solo single front, both “Get Up” and “Candy On The Dancefloor” were big hits with DJs and all over 1001 as many of your productions have been over the years. How would you describe the evolution of your sound over the past few years and what do you think are some of the keys for your music being so dance floor friendly?
I love those kinds of tracks that you can party to but that never lack a positive vibe. I'm a positive person and that reflects in my music. Some music out there has a focus on being hard and as crazy as possible, even aggressive. That's not me. I want to keep a smile within my tracks, even in the clubbier ones. I love to experiment with new sounds too, that's why music always evolves. But I always try not to be too dark.
You just released a massive Timmy Trumpet remix of “Drop That Low”! Tell us what you like about Timmy’s take?
Man, he pushed this track to the max! He increased the tempo, the energy and added those little and big extras to the theme. What a remix, it‘s absolutely wild! He did a great job.
Shifting gears and looking at your Exclusive Mix, what are three highlight tracks included and why do they stand out to you?
TUJAMO - “Say What You Wanna” (Mizmo Remix): We did a remix contest for this single of mine. The Mizmo remix is one of the winners, I really love the sound design and groovy energy. It was just released last Friday! Check out the full remix package here!
Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano X Novak - “RUFF”: Massive sound, tremendous energy. Huge track!
Firebeatz - “Sparks” (TUJAMO Edit): I love this one. I made some own edits for my sets! The power in this track blows me away :-)
With summer just around the corner and your previous seasons always packed with impressive festival slots, what are a few dates that you have on your mind already for summer 2019?
I’m really looking forward to stopping by at my beloved Untold Festival in Romania, Tinderbox (Denmark), S2O Festival (Taiwan), Airbeat One Festival (Germany) and some more I can’t talk about yet. Stay tuned and hope to see you at one of these!
