Get To Know Waysons
With a new release just out on Friday, we were excited to catch up with fast risers Waysons. The Swiss duo has been working closely with R3HAB and his CYB3RPVNK team, and after spending some time refining their sound and their direction, they look poised to make a big splash in the months ahead. Read on for some insights into life inside and outside the studio for the guys!
Hi guys, glad to have you joining us today! Can you please introduce yourselves and tell us about how you each got started with music production and DJing? How did you come together to form Waysons?
We are Doane (23) and Julien (24), originally from Switzerland. We started DJing and producing music back in 2012 when we were in high school. As we started hosting events and because of our shared interest in dance music, we started producing under different aliases. A thing to know about us, we lived in a joint house as neighbors for over 20 years. So, our decision to start a duo was pretty straightforward.
Who are some artists that you're currently drawing inspiration from?
We have been working on our new sound for about seven months, as we started getting interested in the underground scene. In our creative process, and probably subconsciously, we draw inspiration from artists like Ten Walls, ARTBAT and Meduza. Yet by keeping our music accessible and melodic, we have definitely molded a sound that we’re proud to call our own.
Let's jump into your latest release, “NEW WORLD.” How did this track come to be and what was it like working on it?
“NEW WORLD” is a special track for us, not only because it is our first release this year, but because it draws inspiration from loads of different genres that we love. Some cinematic/soundtrack melodies, techno synths, yet also EDM power and arrangement techniques. We’re excited to see how the record is received.
When was “NEW WORLD” first played out and what was the reaction like? Has the track changed at all since this initial play?
Actually, we only played the record for the first time in Warsaw a few weeks ago. We have been heavily focused on creating our own sound and identity, and have started teasing our new music only recently. We’re definitely looking forward to all of the releases which are planned.
Take us inside the studio – what's it like working with one another? What strengths do each of you bring to the table?
At the moment we are based in the UK and in Switzerland, so we have to work remotely (sad stuff). It's going smoothly though, we send each other dozens of WhatsApp audios everyday to share ideas and feedback. There's a strong collaboration between the two of us as we each have our specific role in the duo. One of us focusing more on the creative and production aspects and the other on technical aspects such as sound design and mixing.
What's something that most people don't know about each of you?
We are actually both still part-time students. Doane is studying music and Julien international business management. Another fact about us is that we both love milk way too much.
Can you talk about what it means to have the continued support of R3HAB and the CYB3RPVNK team?
It means a whole lot, as we’re really part of a solid professional team. Everything seems to be falling into place for us as we’re building strong foundations with CYB3RPVNK. The inspiring thing is that they’re extremely open and love some of our weird ideas.
Having R3HAB’s support and trust is something we wouldn’t have imagined a few years ago. We learn loads from his experience and we are super grateful!
And lastly, what has you most excited as we wrap up 2019 and speed ahead into 2020? Are there any goals that you're hoping to achieve?
It will have to be the reaction from our fans. We’ve been very quiet for a long time now, and we’re very excited to share our new direction and hopefully share our passion with an ever-growing Waysons family.
