Girls Love DJs: "Dynamite" & More
Girls Love DJs signed to Spinnin’ Records in January of this year and his first track, “Dynamite” together with Dux n Bass, knocked it out of the park. A perfect crossover drum & bass track, “Dynamite” is sure to get you dancing. To celebrate we caught up with Girls Love DJs about the hit track, his live sets, and his summer plans!
You and Dux n Bass really knocked it out of the park on “Dynamite” – what has the reception to the track been like through your eyes?
It’s my first release via Spinnin’ so I was really impressed by how fast the plays skyrocketed on SoundCloud and YouTube. Spotify was a bit behind because it was first released on their new ‘Premium’ channel, but now that you can’t download it for free anymore I’ve notice that the plays have risen there as well! Very cool to see :).
Do you remember when you first met the guys in Dux n Bass and what your impression was of them? What led to you guys collaborating on “Dynamite”?
I think that both of those boys are very talented so I was very honored to be able to go in the studio with them. The intention at first was to work on another project, but that didn’t work out as we hoped. When I let the boys listen to the vocal/demo of “Dynamite” that I had recorded earlier, everyone got so inspired and it ended up leading us to this end product.
You guys have nailed a feel good track with the energy of drum & bass. What was the production vision and process like?
We looked for the right crossover from both sides, I am known for using a lot of pop influences in my music and Dux n Bass are rulers of drum & bass; I think we did a good job in showing both of our strong suits.
We love the video – where’d you get the idea to do the Napoleon Dynamite branding [check out the music video]?
Haha, actually I was browsing the internet for the word 'dynamite' for some inspiration. When I saw Napoleon Dynamite it reminded me of the last scene of the film (the dancing scene). I happen to have a friend (the first dancer) who resembles him a bit, so I got the idea pretty fast then!
(Not so) fun fact: he actually hurt himself during the warm-up, and because we only had one day to shoot everything we didn’t have time to find a proper solution. Luckily Carlijn was there to fill in for him and she did her very best!
You also recently remixed Goodluck’s track “I’ve Been Thinking About You.” How did you approach this remix?
Juliet (singer Goodluck) has such a beautiful and unique voice, so it had to stay the way it was. Next to that Boris and I found the track so good that we just gave it a little bit more body to turn it into a real club track.
Can you highlight two other tracks from your recent live set at Spinnin’ HQ and what makes them stand out?
I made a disco edit of Calvin Harris’s “Slide,” which I personally think turned out very cool. It has that feel good vibe which you can listen to on a festival during noon. I also find the ID-ID very nice, haha, but I can’t say too much about it yet ;).
What’s next on the production front for you and what’re you looking forward to most this summer?
I signed to Spinnin’ in January so at the moment I’m working to finish my second single. This one will be very different from “Dynamite,” but it will be with a lot of pop elements as you are used to from me. Next to that, I am very much looking forward to my own stage at Amsterdam Open Air, where Tchami, Jax Jones & MK will be playing amongst other great artists. I will also host an evening of my own on The Ark, a cruise ship which sails past Ibiza, Barcelona and Marseille.
