Jordan Jay's Exclusive Mix
Jordan Jay’s picking up steam nicely as we head into fall and we celebrate his two huge summer releases as well as his upcoming music in his Exclusive Mix. Enjoy a deeper look into his work with The Him, releasing on Hexagon Records for the first time, and much more!
Hey Jordi, thanks for joining us today! How’d your summer go this year? What were some highlights?
Thanks for having me! This summer was great. Dropped two new songs on the Spinnin’ main label and Hexagon and met a lot of great people from the scene.
Let’s take a closer look at your Exclusive Mix first. How did you approach crafting your mix and how would the track selection compare to a live set of yours?
I approached it like a live set, actually. All of the songs in this is mix are tunes that I play live as well.
Can you highlight three tracks or artists included and what stands out to you about each?
Love the new tune from the homie Matt Nash. He’s been on fire lately with his releases!
The new G-Pol track on Hexagon is great too, loving the complexity in that tune.
My third pick would be my own remix of The Him’s “Broken Love” because it means a lot to me and I can’t wait until it drops this month!
You’ve become a key player in the future house scene. Can you talk to us some about how you think you fit in with that sound and how you view the progression of the future house sound over time?
What I’m trying to do and where I’m trying to go with my sound is to make music that suits festivals, clubs and radio. In my sets and with my releases I try to combine a more musical future house approach with bangers.
Just recently you released on one of, if not, the leading label in future house music for the first time. What did your Hexagon release and having the support of Don Diablo mean to you?
It definitely means a lot to me. It’s something that I’ve been working towards ever since Don founded the label. I got in contact with them via my buddy Matt Nash. Seeing Don play my music live means so much because he’s undoubtedly the pioneer of the future house scene.
Talk to us some more about working with Arena and the inspiration behind the collaboration?
He sent me an idea with the vocal and some chords. He also had a drop which I didn’t end up using in the end. The vocal had more parts, but we felt like a single phrase would do much better. I spiced up his chords to give them a jazzy vibe which I love exploring, since it’s not done in dance music all that much. It took me a little while to figure out the drop, but once it was there, it felt “Perfect” :) I wanted it to be a banger, yet keep it interesting musically.
You also dropped a huge collab with The Him on Spinnin’ in August! How’d you come to work with the guys, and what was that experience like? What’s your favorite element in the record?
Working with them has been a great experience. We first met at Ultra Miami, after they contacted me asking for a download for my remix of “The Middle,” because they wanted to play it. We exchanged phone numbers and I sent them some music. After this we set up a studio session and got the track done in a day. I already had the old vocal laying around, which is also my favorite element of the track. I sampled an old Z.Z. Hill song and pitched it up. For the drop we had a different version which was more synthy, but went for a more commercial approach which in the end became a really good combination between both of our styles.
What has you excited as we look ahead to the fall? Any big plans that you want to share with readers?
My remix for The Him’s” Broken Love” is coming officially on Spinnin’ September 28th, and later in October I have another single on Lowly, which are both included in this mix! I’m also really looking forward to ADE. Can’t wait to see everyone from the scene in one place again. :)
