Avi got her start DJing and composing songs as a teenager, also while playing a range of musical instruments. Her passion for music and her unique style has gained the attention and respect across the industry. She joins us to discuss her background, her latest release together with Raquel Reigns titled “Lose Yourself,” and more!

Hey Avi, thanks for joining us today! Can you please introduce yourself to our readers?
For sure! I’m a DJ and producer out of Chicago.

Take us all the way back – what made you want to pursue a career in music, and how have you progressed as an artist through your own eyes?
Ever since I was little I was interested in music; I never saw myself doing anything else. My uncle was in a band and I really looked up to him.

As we close out 2021, what have been some of your highlights from this year?
The big highlight for me was being able to DJ live again, playing clubs and other venues which was great unto itself. I played a few festivals and released several tracks that I'm super proud of.

How would you describe your style as a DJ and as a producer? Who are some artists that you draw inspiration from?
My style is pretty open format as a DJ – I enjoy mashing genres and keeping my sets interesting. Dance and rap are my favorite genres so I tend to play bass house and EDM with a sprinkle of tech house, and work in hip hop elements with future and trap tracks. I’ll work in pop, disco… really anything that sounds good. I draw inspiration from other like-minded artists such as DJ Snake, JAUZ, and other open format DJs who are on a more local level.

My productions sometimes mirror my DJ style, but mainly I like to create music with big feelings, singer-songwriter type tracks with an electric feel. Sometimes chill, sometimes more dirty and bass heavy.

Your latest release is a collaboration together with Raquel Reigns titled “Love” Yourself." How did you come to work with Raquel?
We started talking through DMs, I loved her voice and reached out. We enjoyed each other's work so we built a relationship from there and decided to collaborate. It was perfect timing.

Can you talk about the title and the lyrics for “Love Yourself” and the significance that these hold for you?
“Love Yourself” for me is about breaking your own personal walls of insecurity down, looking inside yourself, and finding forgiveness. Each of these things is so important. More often than not, you're the only one standing in your own way. It’s a reminder to give a hard look inward so you can project positivity outward.

Take us through the production – what was it like working on this track, and how did you go from the initial idea to the final version?
Raquel had lyrics in mind, so I started with those. I created melodies that matched the vibe we were going for and built the track from there. We went back and forth on the lyrics for the verses, but it all came together pretty effortlessly. I wanted the drop to be powerful to match the power in her builds, so I focused on the synths and sparse drums for that. I also wanted variation of the beat so I added the drum and bass style ending, which is probably my favorite part.

And lastly, as we look ahead, what has you most excited for 2022?
I’m pumped to keep the momentum going, play more significant shows and perform at new venues and cities. And of course I’m always excited to share new music with the world.
