BEAUZ b2b Ghost: Exclusive Mix & Interview
Today we’re thrilled to be joined by two dynamic duos on the rise. Currently celebrating their Monstercat release “Half A Heart” with a massive side by side China tour, BEAUZ and Ghost are pushing their sound forward not just in Asia, but throughout the world. BEAUZ, whom readers may remember were the organizing force behind Blockeley Music Festival, have been innovative with a new style they call PsyPop. Ghost, who have been fusing rock influences into their music, made waves earlier this year with a massive collaboration “Everybody In The Party” together with Timmy Trumpet and 22Bullets. We caught up with the guys to look closer at “Half A Heart,” their huge show at Superface in Shenzhen, upcoming music, and much more!
Hey guys, thanks for joining us to celebrate your new single “Half A Heart”! What does it mean to you to release on Monstercat?
BEAUZ: Monstercat is a legendary independent label that has been home to multiple generations of genre-defining electronic music waves. We always wanted to join the family and be a part of defining the next era. We are super excited to be working together with our brothers Ghost to introduce PsyPop to the world via Monstercat.
Taking things back, do you remember the first time you heard each other’s music or met? What was your impression?
BEAUZ: When we first met Ghost, we were utterly impressed by the in-depth knowledge they had of music production as well as their unique way of approaching their sounds. We knew that we would have to make something together at some point. With their prowess in fusing rock styled influences into their music, BEAUZ and Ghost are bound to push music from Asia to the world.
GHOST: We met BEAUZ last year when they were doing a small tour in China! We immediately got along with them as we shared many similar values in terms of music production and vision, and were impressed by their persistence and belief in their product and brand. We kept in touch and the rest is history!
What brought you guys together to work on “Half A Heart” and what made the vocals the right fit for the collab? We understand Amandersings is a good friend of yours as well.
BEAUZ: We had been discussing collaborating on a song several times over the last few months after we first met, but due to our individual busy schedules, we never really managed to put our heads together on kicking off a project. However, Covid-19 proved to be a blessing in disguise as the whole industry came to a literal stop during that period and we finally got on the phone to discuss the project, and through a couple of demos sent back and forth, we agreed upon what eventually became “Half A Heart.” In that sense, music was the glue that bonded us even though we are in different countries at that time.
Amandersings is a talented singer and songwriter, who also happens to be a good friend of Ghost. She came into the picture as she was able to truly express the emotions that we were trying to convey with the lyrics.
Can you each highlight your favorite element in the track?
GHOST: Definitely the “ooh” hook on the drop. It got us at hello!
BEAUZ: The lyrics. We broke all of our hearts writing them :’)
You’re also celebrating with a big “Half A Heart” tour in China as well. How was the kick off show through each of your eyes at Superface?
BEAUZ: UNREAL!! We never saw anything like that. We believe that our music truly reached into the people's hearts that night. This is only the first of many, we're sure things are going to get even more interesting!!
GHOST: It was a great success! The turnout was bigger than expected and the show was lit! Crowd response was on point and they lapped up everything we threw at them!
Looking closer at your own sets, what are two must play tracks or artists for each of you, and why?
GHOST: Timmy Trumpet is one of our must-play artists and our latest remix of BEAUZ’s “Count The Hours.” We are usually drawn by high energy music and these fit the bill perfectly for us during our live shows.
BEAUZ: Of course our very own “Count The Hours” because it represents the new genre that we created called PsyPop. Other than that. we think Timmy Trumpet and Valentino Khan are the two of the biggest powerhouses of most droppable anthems out there!
Can you each highlight another of your own recent productions that you’re particularly proud of and what makes it stand out?
BEAUZ: We gotta say “Treasure U” is the song we are the most proud of. Although it's not particularly big internationally, it seems to be an absolute hit in Asia. We fused the inspiration that we got from Mandarin pop with our edgy sounds and created this PsyPop hit that both of us wrote, produced and sang on. We also have some HUUUGE collaborations lined up, which we can't talk about yet (ughh). Stay tuned!
GHOST: We have a brand new ID that has not been released yet that we've played at all our recent shows. We wrote a killer hook for the chorus and the drop really goes off. The crowd response is amazing wherever we play it! It's featured as the last song for this mixtape in fact!
Can you talk to us a bit more about the return to touring and regular gigs for each of you as the rest of the world still stands almost entirely on lockdown?
GHOST: First off, it is a real blessing to be able to tour and perform in light of the situation that’s happening globally and we are really grateful for being able to do so. The touring scene in China has also changed as venues have a reduced overall budget for guest performances, so performance opportunities for higher-value bracket artists have evolved into more brand-related partnerships as opposed to regular bookings. Also, there has been a rise in themed events that also seems to be a precursor to the evolution of bookings and tours moving forward in the market.
BEAUZ: We are absolutely blessed by God to be one of a handful of artists who are able to perform given where the rest of the world is at the moment. China was able to get the virus under control with their intrinsic societal empathy - with the world class level venues and festivals springing back to life, other artists are still not allowed here yet. We hope that we will eventually be able to open the doors up to everybody as well.
And as we look ahead, what else has you guys excited to close out 2020?
BEAUZ: We will be wrapping up our second EP, Genesis, followed by more brand new music through till the next year! We want to do everything we can to bring Asian music to every single household in the world. With the virus isolating us more than ever, we want to bring people closer than ever, with our music. <3
GHOST: First up our remix of BEAUZ’s “Count The Hours” is dropping on Armada on September 18th! Also, we’ve got a couple more releases lined up moving forward till the end of the year, a few festival bookings in October (yay) and hopefully some bigger events (crossing our fingers) that round out this roller coaster of a year!
