RayRay's Exclusive Mix
RayRay has grown to become an integral member of the Barong Family and her new Alien Invasion EP has been making waves! Her music has not only become a staple in Yellow Claw's sets, but is doing the damage in her sets worldwide! Her DJ sets are unmistakable – raw, relentless energy showcasing her open format background and larger than life on stage personality, and we’re honored to have RayRay headline our 1001Tracklists Night at 1900 Le Theater this Friday in Hanoi during Wired Music Week Vietnam! There’s no better way to get ready for the party than with her Exclusive Mix, turn it up!
RayRay thanks for joining us! We’re excited to be celebrating your new EP on Barong and can’t wait for this Friday’s event at 1900 in Hanoi – so many exciting things to talk about! Looking first at your Alien Invasion EP – what’s the response to the release been like in your eyes?
The EP is doing really good so far, especially “Outer Space” and “Back n Forth.” People have been reposting and sharing it all over since it has been released, super crazy to see everyone talking about it. Specifically with the “Back n Forth” track, I didn't expect it would do so well as this was my first time that I tried something new in the style of jersey club... been getting a lot of support from everyone including Yellow Claw.
The EP features some massive collaborations with Juyen Sebulba, Aazar, and Gianni Marino! Can you pick one of them, tell us some more about your relationship with that artist and how you guys ended up collaborating? How do you feel that the track is a good representation of both of your styles?
Let’s talk about my collab with Aazar, “Back n Forth.” I first met Aazar at the Barong Shanghai studio camp in 2018, but didn't get the chance to work with him. I eventually approached him and asked him if he wanted to work on something together and he said yes... we then sat down together during ADE last year at the Barong studios and finished this one. Love his energy & his sound so everything flowed super nicely when working with each other!
I really feel like both of our personalities are similar in the way that we are both positive and energetic individuals and you can hear that in the track. We wanted to make more of a sing-along kind of vocal vibe and guess what? People love it!
Also big congratulations to Aazar for becoming a father!
Highlight one of the two originals from the EP for us. What are some of your favorite elements and how do you feel that it speaks to your evolution as a producer?
RayRay - “Outer Space.” It’s kinda like a follow-up of “Ninja” from my last EP. It’s a super hardcore dubstep track with my own vocal saying “One for the treble, two for the bass, and three for the alien in the outer fucking space.” It’s like a statement of myself, RayRay the alien, I’m going to invade this world with my music. It’s a super Barong Family style and head banging track. If you listen to my previous EP and compare it to this one, I really feel like you can see a big improvement in my production skills. Also with my previous EP all of the tracks were collaborations, but for this one I decided that I really wanted to elaborate on my own sound and what I am capable of.
Your music has become a staple in Yellow Claw's sets – what does the support of the guys mean to you?
I’m hugely grateful that they gave me these opportunities to further that and work with even more artists around the world. They are always pushing me to take my music to new dimensions, and are now even co-managing me with my manager Alan. They gave me a lot of advice on my productions and all around industry advice. It’s super nice to have Barong Family as my major release label and a steady platform to share my music. Without meeting them or without the opportunity that they gave me, I probably wouldn't have had the chance to meet and work with so many amazing people... big shoutout to YC!
Simultaneously with the above you’ve grown into a key member of the Barong Family. Everything that you do together with the label and the artists really makes it seem like a true family. Can you speak some more to that? What makes Barong such a good home for you?
Barong Family have put their efforts into the Asian & European market over the past years and they have honestly created such a big international family of creative talent. I feel like Barong really push for an intimate vibe with their artists and that’s why it really does feel like a family. We do a lot of shows together, label nights, writing camps and all come together during music events such as ADE. Barong are really inviting towards everyone from around the world as long as they see potential in someone. Artists who have been with Barong from the very start are also very welcoming and supportive towards your vision. FAMILY IS EVERYTHING!
This weekend you’re headlining at 1900 Le Theater in Hanoi and we’ll be streaming the set live to the world. For anyone who might not be familiar, how would you describe your DJ sets and style?
My set consists of nothing but pure energy and I always feel really confident when performing. I feel like there is a wide variety of sounds within my set while still keeping my identity bold. When you’re at a RayRay show, you will always break your f*cking neck b*tch. Be ready for a cute alien girl unexpectedly playing hard as hell music.
Talk to us some more about your strong background in freestyle DJing and how you bring that into your sets today?
I like to pay tribute to my roots of hip-hop music and combine all different types of music into my set. It’s always easy for me to switch everything up and give the audience everything that they want at once. Sometimes you can catch my full live set which features me scratching or playing drum machines.
Thinking about your Exclusive Mix and/or your live sets, what are two or three must play tracks or artists to include and why?
Virtual Self – “Ghost Voices” (GTA Psy Edit). This is one of my favourites to play in my sets. The vibe is so good and really contrasts well with everything else that I play. It’s a feel good track and can be played anywhere.
“Super Noise.” This is an unreleased ID that I made with Yellow Claw & Juyen Sebulba. Everybody is waiting for this track, and I’m always getting DMs asking when I’m going to release it. The hype is real and it always goes down like a bomb.
RayRay – “Ninja.” This is my favourite track of mine which I’m most well known for and people always love to see me drop this one. Shoutout to Crisis Era!
And lastly, what has you most excited for the show this Friday at 1900?
I haven't been to Vietnam for around two or so years now, but it’ll be my second time playing in Hanoi. As I remember the crowd was really good from the last show I did there and this is gonna be a big return! Cannot wait to bring all of my new music to the fans!!
