Sam Feldt: All Systems Go

We’re excited to be here today with Sam Feldt to celebrate his incredible new single “Heaven (Don’t Have A Name)” together with Jeremy Renner as well as the launch of the new 1001Tracklists Apple Music Mix series. Each month we’ll be coming to you with a special DJ Mix exclusively cleared & distributed to Apple Music through our partner Dubset Media, and we couldn’t think of anyone better to kick the series off than Sam. He’s come back stronger than ever from his leg injury this summer, with a renewed passion for music and touring, and his latest original is an awesome piece of feel good house music. We took a deep look at his work together with Jeremy, return to the stage, and exciting ADE plans!!

Sam, thanks for joining us today! What a unique collaboration working with Jeremy Renner! Big fan of his as an actor but didn’t even know he was a singer until this track honestly. Did you know Jeremy from his acting or singing/songwriter prior to “Heaven”? Talk to us about how you came to work together on this track.
Thanks! Yes, I already knew him from several movies such as The Hurt Locker and The Avengers. I, as many others, didn’t know that he could sing. Once I found out, we were introduced and started working together on this track.

Take us inside the production – what was the inspiration for the track, how’d the vocal factor into the production, and what were some important final tweaks?
Working together with Jeremy was really something different for me. He is fairly new to dance music and we did not know each other personally before this collaboration so it was definitely an interesting process. Working together was great though, I’m really happy with the result. His voice has an amazing raw edge to it and mixes really well with the music. I wanted the song to match his Hollywood background. It had to have a certain Hollywood greatness to it, something both dramatic and powerful at the same time. I think that we were able to achieve that sound and tell a cinematic story with this song. We’re both really proud of it and truly happy with the final result.

What to you stands out most about Jeremy’s vocal? What makes his voice so well suited for this particular track?
Jeremy has a great voice – you immediately feel engaged when he starts singing and the way his voice translates the emotions and feelings he’s singing about is truly remarkable. It just works together in a very natural way. He did a great job and I think that his voice compliments the rest of the song perfectly in every way.

You guys had the chance to perform the track together live during one of your festivals sets, so can you tell us some more about that experience?
It’s always great to give your audience something new. I’ve done a lot of shows over the years as a DJ and not too long ago also with my live band and Jeremy of course is not unfamiliar to being in the spotlight as well, but man, this was something special. Especially for Jeremy, since he never played for such a big crowd before. It really gives me goosebumps again talking about it. Nobody expected this, which made it extra special. The reaction of the crowd was incredible, they went completely crazy. It was great to play the song for the first time and get such an amazing response. Really is the cherry on top and the ultimate prize for all the hard work!

And on that note, how has your return to touring felt since your leg injury?
It’s great to be able to work again. I must say, though the accident was very unfortunate, it did give me a lot of time to focus on my music... But it’s great to be back again! I have a lot of new energy and doing what I love really helps tremendously. Of course, let’s not forget all of the love and support I got from my fans from around the world. I know it might sound cliché, but they really helped me to stay positive during my recovery. It will be something I never forget. This week we’ve got ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event) coming up which I’m pretty excited about as well. Slowly we’re getting back on track and I’m almost at the point where I can say goodbye to my crutches once and for all.

Looking closer at your 1001 Mix, what are two of your favorite tracks or artists included, and why?
Hanne Mjoen – “Sounds Good To Me.” A new talent from Norway. A great singer and I love her tracks! This is her first track out on Spinnin’ Records.

Silk City & Dua Lipa – “Electricity.” Really fits my style. Love the vocals and production.

Lastly, turning our attention forward to ADE, what can you tell us about your plans this year?
I have something exciting coming up as I will be hosting my very own event on Wednesday, October 17th. It will be an intimate night with 200 of my biggest fans. Really something special! The venue is amazing and there will be no regular ticket sales. All tickets can be won by fans, so I think that the vibe that night will be just perfect! Really looking forward to it, only a few more days now!

I’m also talking on two panels during the week that are part of the ADE conferences which will be held in a large theater. One is called: The Future of Plastic, where I’ll be looking at and talking about ways to create more awareness on matters surrounding sustainability and how they affect us all and what we can do as human beings ourselves to take matters into our own hands, change our ways and take more action to create a better world for ourselves and the generations to come. The other panel elaborates on it even more and shows people what we as artists can do to help communities and create lasting changes that will be beneficial to all. Of course, I’ll also be doing a lot of press like interviews for TV, radio, blogs and magazines. So it’s going to be an amazing week in my hometown of Amsterdam. I can’t wait for it to begin!
