On The Rise: Max Chapman
2016 was a big year for Max Chapman. He played shows across the world and he released his top 6 selling tracks ever, including overall Beatport #1 “Body Jack.” His music has attracted the support of some of the biggest names in the underground scene: guys like Carl Cox, Jamie Jones, and Eats Everything, and his music can be heard all over Ibiza. We took some time to catch up with Max as he looks to build on last year’s momentum embarking on his first ever North and Central American tour.
You had a big 2016 of releases, with your top 6 selling tracks all coming out last year. How does that feel?
It’s been a bit crazy to tell you the truth. It all began in January when I released my album, and didn’t really stop – getting the Beatport #1 with “Body Jack” in September was the icing on the cake though; as a producer it’s got to be the one thing everyone dreams of. I’ve been locked away in the studio since Ibiza and there’s plenty more to come in 2017, I can promise you that.
Your tracks have been picking up support from the likes of Carl Cox, Jamie Jones, Richy Ahmed, Eats Everything, and many more big time artists. What does this kind of artist support mean to you?
It means everything. These are the guys who I looked up to when I was growing up and starting out DJing, so to know that they’re dropping my tracks at some of the biggest shows in the world is an amazing feeling.
Do you have any favorites among your 2016 releases? What makes them stand out?
Well, my album on Mad Tech – Catch Me If You Can – is dedicated to the memory of my late father so that means a lot to me for personal reasons; it’s not something I produced with the dance floor in mind. The other big one has got to be “Body Jack” which was released on Elrow and hit the overall Beatport #1 – that’s a huge milestone in my career and totally unexpected.
Any works in progress or upcoming releases that you can tell us about?
I’ve got releases signed to Toolroom, Hot Creations and Wow already lined up for this year, and expect more to be added too.
Looks like you’ve also been touring all over lately – how has that been for you? Any favorite shows from last year?
I’m just about to set off on my first proper Central and North American tour which is really exciting – it’ll be the first time I’ve played in the US so that’s going to be an awesome start to the year. 2016 had some stand out ones; Puur Festival was one, and Lost Beach in Ecuador, which was my first Boiler Room set and an all-round incredible night that I’d love to do again.
What can you tell us about your upcoming US tour? Any shows that you’re particularly excited about?
I’ve never played at BPM Festival so that’s definitely a huge one for me, but the US dates are also firsts. San Francisco, New York and Las Vegas – I’ve heard that the vibe over there is amazing, so I’m really excited to experience it first-hand. I’ve got plenty of new tunes to test out too so look out for them!
What are you most excited about in 2017?
I’ve got a stack of dates in the diary between now and May already, and there’s already talk of Ibiza plans so that’s exciting. I’m just hoping to at least match how great 2016 was!
