Plastik Funk's Exclusive Mix

Enjoying the biggest summer of his career there was no better time to celebrate with Rafael of Plastik Funk!! 2018 has seen the talented German release official remixes of Robin Schulz, Alle Farben, and NERVO, perform at massive festivals such as Tomorrowland and Parookaville as well as hold down residencies in both China and Ibiza. Turn it up loud for his Exclusive Mix and dive deeper into the summer of Plastik Funk!!

Rafael, thanks so much for joining us. It’s been a packed summer for you filled with releases and non-stop touring! How’s this summer been through your eyes and compared to years past?
Hey guys, thanks for having me! It’s been the best summer of my career for sure. It’s been so hectic that I have to pinch myself once in a while to realise all these awesome things are happening right now! I’m tired for sure as I’ve been non-stop touring since February, but happy to have played so many good shows and to be able to release my music on the best labels an artist can wish for.

Right off the bat we have to know, what have been two or three go to weapons in your sets and why?
There are a lot of tracks that I love to play this summer, but definitly one of the biggest hits of 2018 is Axwell & Ingrosso – “More Than You Know.” Im playing the extended mix and sometimes the Firebeatz Remix. Always a sure play at every festival in the world.

Im a big fan of Curbi’s productions and I’ve been playing his track “Blow Up” in almost every set this summer. I’ve actually got an edit with a “Put Your Hands Up For Detroit“ acappella that works really well for me.

And another must play that makes me so happy and proud is my remix for Robin Schulz feat. Marc Scibilia – “Unforgettable.”

And while we’re on the topic of your Robin Schulz remix, talk to us about putting your own spin on “Unforgettable.”
Robin’s productions are always next level and he delivers hit after hit so when I received the vocals I was super hyped to start working on the remix. I’m happy that the remix has been doing so well and very thankful to my management for the opportunity to remix an amazing artist like Robin.

Performing at Tomorrowland this year on the Robin Schulz & Friends stage must’ve been a highlight as well! Tell us some more about that experience. What makes Tomorrowland so special to you?
It was my second Tomorrowland and it’s gotten even bigger and more impressive than three years ago when I first played. Already then I was in love with this amazing festival. So many crazy stages, almost every stage itself could be its own festival. They put so much love and effort into each and every detail – really Tomorrowland is how you would dream of a party!! The Robin Schulz & Friends stage was beautiful. I had a packed dance floor and was happy to see a lot of fans of the Funk Family!

You also did a big remix for Alle Farben this year. What elements of “H.O.L.Y.” did you want to preserve in your remix and how do you feel that you were able to make the track your own?
Sometimes it’s not easy to create a remix in my style when you get the vocal parts or hear the sound of the original. But similar to the remix for Robin, when I received the original vocals from Alle, I knew that I could make the track into a hit! Alle is such a genius with the sounds he uses and the vocal of “H.O.L.Y.” is so catchy. I used the main melody and trumpets to create the Plastik Funk signature lead and drop melody and tried to make it fit perfectly on both festival stages and in clubs. I’m so happy to see that even Alle Farben plays my remix quite a lot in his sets which is the best compliment you can get!

We constantly see you in China on your social media and you’re holding down a residency at the #1 Club in China (One Third Club in Beijing). Can you tell us some more about your history of performing in China and how you obtained this residency?
I’ve been playing in Asia a lot for some years now. China was always one of the markets people liked me and booked me again and again. My agent in China always did a great job for me and last year this big club group designed and conceptualized the next level super club. They specifically wanted to create a great team out of both Chinese and international artists. I played the opening and right after we signed a residency playing the club every seven weeks. It’s an amazing club with all big names in business you can imagine. The crew of One Third is so creative, they are bringing this club to the level of the best clubs in the world very soon!

What makes the Chinese crowd/market unique to you? How do you view the growth and development of the electronic music scene there currently? Where do you see it headed in the next year?
China always tries to create big projects. It’s a big country and if you want to stick out you have to create something big and unique. It’s very interesting to see how many big and impressive clubs they have in China now and it’s only the beginning really. All big festival brands are heading to and happening in China now. This market will get huge in the next two years!

For the electronic music scene in general, it’s actually a difficult time. We had this big hype of EDM music some years ago, but at the moment a lot of clubs are closing down or they focus more on open format events… often it’s more about selling bottles and VIP tables than just about music and dancing. I hope this situation will stabilize in the near future, but at the moment I hear so many promoters upset and complaining. Honestly, many will have to close their clubs forever. People just aren’t going to clubs anymore like they were doing it three to four years ago. In the summer we have thousands of festivals and these have become the base of the music scene, the clubs have a big problem when it comes to filling their dancefloors, both in the summer but also in the winter.

China is not the only place where you’re holding down a residency as you also this year have become a regular in Ibiza. Where have you been playing there and what makes an Ibiza Plastik Funk set special?
Ibiza has become my second home. I just love this island. The beaches, the restaurants and the clubbing. I’m half Spanish so for me it’s a great connection to my Spanish roots. I have my Plastik Funk & Friends Boat Party with the team of Oceanbeat Ibiza which is always sold out. We are doing six boats this year together. And I’m also playing some shows at Eden and Amnesia. I love how people turn into party animals when they step on our island. I’m also happy to have the chance to play some different parties in Ibiza as well where I can play different sets compared to what I normally play on the big stages as Plastik Funk. This year I already played a special party at Bora Bora Ibiza where I played a 4 hour underground tech house set for 1,000 crazy party people and I loved it! Everything is possible – it’s all about the music!

And lastly, we understand that you have some new music coming up on Sony, so what can you tell us about those tracks?
I’m happy to say we just got signed to Sony Music. It’s a dream come true to work with a major label like Sony Music. The first two tracks that we’re going to release are full radio tracks, but you can still hear that it's 100% Plastik Funk. I'm super happy with the new sound that we are releasing now!I We’ll also always do a club mix which I can play in my sets and for all the DJs out there.

Besides that I’m releasing my remix for NERVO next week, and I have another four remixes ready for Warner Music, Kontor Music, Big Beat, and I’m working on two big collabs and will finalise some more new releases in September.

What else can I say, it’s been a great year so far!
