1 On 1 With "Cola" Star Elderbrook
We were delighted at the chance to catch up with Elderbrook as he readied for his North American tour. On the heels of the Grammy nominated “Cola,” which was also our Top Overall Track of 2017, he’s enjoying taking his live show on the road. He gave us a sneak peak into those sets as well as of course shedding some insight into “Cola,” working with CamelPhat, and the incredible reception to the hit record.
You’re right in the midst of your US tour, so how’s it been going so far? What have been some favorite dates, and what are some you’re most excited about?
It’s been going well. I started the tour off in Miami which was great. I played a place called Floyd which was actually a really cool venue. I’m currently en route to Montreal as we speak for the second date. I’m looking forward to shows like Montreal and Chicago because I haven’t played there before. Toronto and New York I’m excited for as well as they’ve already sold out! To be honest though, I just love playing music – looking forward to them all!!

For anyone unfamiliar, can you tell us a little bit about your live show and how you approach those sets?
When I play live, it’s all original material. I’m an electronic act, but I try and incorporate live aspects when I can. I play synth on stage, use an MPD and electronic drums as well. As well as that, I’m singing over every song.

Where in your sets has “Cola” been fitting in and what has the reception to the track been like in your live sets?
Obviously “Cola” has been my most successful song to date, and as a result, I’ve had amazing experiences with audiences to the sound of that being played out live! It’s an incredible moment to see a room full of people all singing, bouncing, smiling and enjoying themselves to the sound of your own music.

The success of “Cola” has been out of this world. For you personally, what has been one or two of the most meaningful measures of the success of that track?
I think, honestly, the moments that stand out for me are when I’m driving along and I just hear it on the radio. Or when I’m in a shopping center or watching TV and suddenly hear it. It surprises me every time and it always makes me smile.

Do you think you’ll ever write a hook that good again? :) But more seriously, what makes a good hook to you, and while you may never know if a record will connect with listeners, are there any takeaways from “Cola” that are going to influence your future productions/songwriting?
I’d like to think I have a shot at making something as good as that hook! Who knows though? It’s all subjective. I’m just going to keep on writing music that I personally love and am proud of. That way, whether it connects with people or doesn’t, it will still mean something to me. It’s funny you mentioned not knowing when a record is going to connect with listeners – after having written “Cola” with the CamelPhat guys, we didn’t really think that much of it. It was only after Defected Records signed it that I started to think they could be onto something. It’s just kept on surprising me since then!

Do you ever see yourself and CamelPhat working together on a follow up record? You’ve also now worked with quite a prominent list of electronic music producers including Gorgon City, andhim, and Mike Mago, so are there any that you really hope to work with one day?
It would be great to work with CamelPhat at some point again. They’re both really nice guys and we just get along. I guess it turns out we work together quite well so would be silly not to! At the moment though I definitely feel as though I need to focus on my own records. Obviously I’m a producer as well so it’s important for me to show that with the next record I put out.

Outside of your current tour, what’s on the horizon production wise from you and what’s one goal you have for yourself in 2018?
I’ll be releasing my debut major label single with Parlophone / Big Beat Records, and will be finishing up my debut album – both of which will be coming sometime soon in 2018.
