1001Tracklists Spotlight: Godlands Celebrates "TELL ME"
Today we’re joined by Godlands, as she celebrates her explosive Tisoki collaboration “TELL ME.” Out now on Monstercat, it’s an exciting step towards her forthcoming June EP, and with her just announced massive GODSP33D tour, another sign that 2022 is Godlands year! Turn it up as we go up and down the bpm ladder in a loaded Spotlight Mix bringing live show energy and featuring tunes from Habstrakt, Knock2, MUST DIE!, Nitepunk, RL Grime, and so many more!
Annabel, thanks so much for joining us to celebrate your new single “TELL ME”! How’s the build-up to this record been through your eyes?
Thank you so much for the opportunity! It’s been great, I’ve had the chance to play “TELL ME” out at a couple of shows and the reaction has been elite!
Take us back a bit, when did you first meet Brad or hear Tisoki’s music? What was your impression?
I’ve actually never physically met Brad, or maybe I have and I just can’t remember, potentially because I’ve been way too inebriated. But I think we just started following each other on social media. I was always a fan of his music. The first track of Tisoki’s I remember hearing was “Bring It Back” which was ironically also a bass house track.
How did your relationship progress from there to collaborating together?
Honestly we became good internet friends, we’ve spoken quite often about music. I’ve helped him out with some Photoshop stuff as well, just on the side. It’s been really nice to have another friend in the business. Sometimes it can feel a bit lonely, but knowing you have a mate that understands actually gives you peace of mind.
Looking closer at “TELL ME,” what’s your favorite element in the production?
I really like the lead sound in the B section of the first drop. It really rounds out the track nicely and fills those pockets that were missing in the A section.
Earlier this year you dropped your first single on Monstercat, “GODSP33D.” What makes that record special to you?
“GODSP33D” was the first-ever track I released on Monstercat, that in itself makes it super special. Monstercat has been a dream label of mine and to be welcomed with such open arms has been truly a blessing.
What does it mean to you to release on Monstercat, and what have you liked most about working with the label?
It’s meant the absolute world to me, they truly believe in the Godlands project and are really backing my ideas which is definitely what you want in a label. They have a really good sense of what they want as a label and that's something to be proud of and certainly a partnership I would love to see flourish in the future.
Turning our attention to your Spotlight Mix, how did you approach creating a flow? How might you compare and contrast this mix to your current live sets?
My Spotlight Mix is definitely the same energy and flow as I have in my live sets. I like to travel up and down the BPM ladder. Not just keeping to trap, but adding sections of bass house, future, and dnb. It all comes down to energy.
How do you feel the Godlands sound evolved during the pandemic? Where do you see yourself heading now that live shows and festivals are coming back in full force?
While the pandemic was absolutely horrific for literally everyone, it really smashed artists around. Although I didn't make any money for two years, do shows, or tour successfully, it did give me a chance to sharpen my skills and I believe it was a blessing in disguise. I improved so much on my craft, and I allowed myself to be engulfed in creativity without the interruption of tours.
Looking ahead, what’s keeping you excited and motivated on a daily basis? Are there any other plans for 2022 that you’d like to share?
2022 has already given me some amazing opportunities. 22 has been a lucky number of mine for a while so I have some weird superstition that it’s going to continue to be great. I am going on tour! All over Australia and even got my first European gig in Ibiza which is another dream come true. I don’t know what else I can announce just yet but it’s definitely bucket list material. Super excited for what's to come!
