Tiësto's Top 101 Producers Exclusive Mix & Interview
There’s no bigger way to celebrate the Top 101 Producers 2020 week than with an Exclusive Mix & Interview from the legend himself, Tiësto! 2020's #4 finisher in the rankings has enjoyed another massive year showcasing his innovation and ingenuity on the production front. From the #2 Overall Track Of 2020, club banger “My Frequency,” to the launch of his melodic house project VER:WEST, no one knows how to connect with fellow DJs and fans like Tiësto. 2020 has also seen Tiësto position himself to not only make the most of his club tracks, but also elevate his crossover appeal to new heights, signing an exclusive album deal with Atlantic Records. HIs latest single “The Business” is an exciting signal of what’s ahead on that front and quickly rose to the #1 Overall Track on 1001Tracklists. On the heels of a big finish in the 2020 rankings, we were delighted to celebrate with Tiësto's Exclusive Mix and catch up to look closer at his biggest tracks of the year, unrelenting passion for electronic music, and future plans.
Tijs, thanks so much for taking the time to join us to celebrate the Top 101 Producers 2020. Can you tell us a little about what makes these rankings meaningful to you?
This list is special because it represents the support and love for the music from all of the DJs playing songs and including them in their mix shows and sets! It’s the most relevant industry list!
Having the support on a record by Tiësto is one of the highest honors possible for many producers, so we’re curious, what does having the support of other DJs on your records mean to you? Are there any particular artists supporting your music that still to this day really excite you?
Collaborating is one of my favorite things to do. You always can learn something from other creative talents and I always go in with an open mind. Especially with new artists, who may have a completely new and fresh perspective. I love supporting new talented artists because their enthusiasm for the music makes me excited as well. I love getting support from other DJs as well, it’s an honor if they play my music! No matter which DJ or how famous he or she is, I love all of the support I get.
Musical Freedom is well represented throughout the rankings this year as many of the label’s signature artists are included! What does it mean to you to be responsible not only for your own success, but also to have a major hand in that of many other artists in the rankings?
It is amazing! I am very proud of Musical Freedom and our roster – everyone is so talented and to see them representing in the Top 101 is inspiring. It’s really the best feeling discovering artists, helping them move forward, and then seeing them become successful. That’s so satisfying to me!
As we reflect on your year, we have to highlight “My Frequency” with 7 Skies. It currently sits as the #2 Overall Track Of 2020 on 1001 and it could be heard on dancefloors all over the world before COVID. What makes that track work so well in a club or at a festival?
It’s got such great energy!! I am very pleased and excited that it made it to #2!! It’s just the perfect Tiësto track! It’s fresh, uplifting, unique and can fit in pretty much every DJ’s set! I have to give much credit to 7Skies on this one as he did most of the work with Luis Torres. Both super talented!
“Coffee (Give Me Something)” with Vintage Culture quickly became one of the most addicting tracks for us during quarantine! What was it like for you working with Vintage? He’s been on absolute tear this year production wise and we love the progressive vibe you guys put in the track.
It was great working together, we talked for a while to find the perfect track to collab on and we finally got it together. He’s a superstar in Brazil and soon worldwide. Very talented DJ as well. I love the song because it has a bit of an old school feeling to it, but it has complete freshness of 2020!
Since then you’ve announced the start of an exciting new chapter with your exclusive signing with Atlantic Records and forthcoming new album. Break it down for us – what made this the right next step for you in your career?
As an artist it is important for me to continue to evolve and challenge myself. Change excites me and motivates me. My new single “The Business” is a fresh sound with the fresh start. There are two sides to Tiësto. One of them lives in the Musical Freedom world with big room festival bangers and the other one has more Spotify appeal. Atlantic is great for helping me on that second side to make the right songs. I love both so I’ve got the best of both worlds now!
You kicked off the new journey and new sound with the release of “The Business” at the end of September and less than a month later you’re already sitting at the #1 Top Overall Track position on 1001Tracklists! What’s the secret?! But more seriously, you’ve shown incredible diversity in your productions (and we haven’t even mentioned VER:WEST yet) and everything resonates with DJs and fans alike. Are there any specific characteristics that you find work for you universally across your productions, regardless of genre?
It is always important to me to continue to explore new sounds and styles, but I’m always looking to get something that I would myself be excited to play. That’s one of the reasons why I still love music and continue to do so much. Because it never gets boring, every year is different and every year things change in our scene. It’s amazing to be part of this and to keep finding a way to surprise people! The secret to it all is... does the track and what you are doing excite you?? If not, it’s time to move on.
And finally, what does the future hold in store for you on the production front? Can we expect more crossover records with an eye towards a more global hit? Have you given any thought on how to balance those productions with your club records and the exciting launch of VER:WEST?
These are exciting times, even more exciting for when we get back to normal! The roaring 20s are coming!!!!! I am excited for next year to go out and play again. I am listening to a lot of old dance records right now and will maybe use a sample here or there from a 90s hit. Also very excited for my VER:WEST project. The reactions from people have been amazing so far and I am just gonna wing the project just like it started. We’ll see where it goes! Trying to figure out the next sound for it, lots of experimenting going on right now.
