Pull Me Closer: Dimitri Vegas Delivers Massive Exclusive Mix
Today we’re honored to be joined by Dimitri Vegas as he goes next level with his Exclusive Mix! Celebrating his debut solo release “Pull Me Closer” which dropped on Friday, he’s crafted an exciting mix of house, tech, and progressive featuring exclusive IDs, big releases on his House Of House imprint, and some favorites from the moment. His Exclusive Mix is the result of the artist freedom afforded to him over the past year, and our interview goes in depth on what he’s been working on. Read on for an inside look at his new music, expanding work with the Smash The House family of labels, and exciting future ahead!
Dimitri, thanks so much for joining us to celebrate “Pull Me Closer”! Can you talk to us about where you’re feeling musically at the moment and what made this the right time for your first solo single?
It’s a bit of a weird time where on one side you have a ridiculous amount of time to create, but on the other hand you don’t really have shows to actually play and test records. It’s been refreshing to not have to work with a certain ‘agenda’ to make tracks that work on the dancefloor per se, but just make whatever you feel like making in the moment and that has been providing some very interesting results. In all fairness, the more festival oriented music has taken the backseat for the last months – but who knows what crazy ideas we’ll get once we start looking at that again with a completely fresh mindset. And since we have so much music ready, and Mike is also about to drop a solo album, which is sounding amazing by the way, I thought it could be a fun thing to also release a solo track after almost 15 years of DVLM.
Looking closer at the production, how did you move from initial idea and sketch to the final production? How did the vocal factor into the production?
It’s a very vocal driven track – so that was the jump-off for sure. With that as a focus point, the beat is there to make it stand out more rather than take a prominent role, like in many of our other productions.
Can you compare and contrast your work on more crossover singles like “Pull Me Closer” to mainstage bangers like DVLM puts out? Do you prefer producing one or the other?
It’s been kind of liberating to not have to work with a ticking clock of constantly having to make new tracks, remixes and bootlegs to keep your set ‘fresh,’ but I can’t say that I like one or the other more. It’s just ‘different.’
It’s just a tad scarier as you don’t have the chance to actually test the tracks on crowds right now, so you kind of have to go off that gut feeling that you have in the studio when you think a track is big… but the moment you actually play it and people go nuts – is priceless.
“Pull Me Closer” is out on your imprint House Of House. It’s now the third release on the label, with two Dimitri Vegas edits out previously. What can you tell us about your plans for the label and a new home for your music?
With Smash The House really going next level by signing all of these big artists, launching new sub-labels and creating exciting content… I felt that it was a good idea to start a little boutique imprint under the mothership to help build new artists and have friends release some more laidback music. I wanted to take things in a slightly new direction and have some fun with different ideas together with the artists releasing on the label. House Of House takes its inspiration more from the white island, but without it having to be strictly underground, as usually is the case when people think ‘Ibiza.’
Smash The House on the whole has also been really stepping up their game with releases and we’re seeing a tremendous weekly release schedule across the main label and your other imprints. Can you share some more about your work there and plans? Who are some artists and releases that you guys have coming up that you’re most excited about?
Our vision has always been to create a content platform that would be a base for our music, but also give us the power to develop new artists and release the music we love. The dream started in 2010 and today we’re still pushing boundaries and setting new goals. It’s crazy to think how many amazingly talented artists like Timmy Trumpet, 3 Are Legend, NERVO, Steve Aoki, David Guetta, Natti Natasha, Daddy Yankee, Regard… we’ve had on the label. The brand had been expanding to e-sports, but also gaming, music and lifestyle influencers, NFT’s and content production. Apart from hosting various sublabels, we are also the home for Vini Vici’s Alteza records and have an ‘exclusive’ signed artist roster including Bassjackers, MATTN, Jaxx & Vega, Wolfpack, Angemi & many more, while also supporting emerging talent like Bryan V, Suark Adrian Fyrla, Basstian, ShyGhy, and Nooma to name a few.
Today our Smash brand has also become known for a multitude of other projects like merch drops, events and arena hosts (which we look forward to restart once everything opens up again), and as I mentioned also our Smash Universe agency that brings gaming and music closer together.
As an artist, where have you been drawing inspiration from over the past year? What has it been like without a dancefloor to test your music on and connect with fans across the world?
As I mentioned before, ‘different’ is the term I like to use… don’t get me wrong, it’s really terrible what happened around the world, but for me personally, it’s just been a different world this past year or so, where I have so much more time than I would normally when we were touring. I actually have time to do proper ‘office’ work now, and not do that in between flights and shows. It brings a certain focus that was harder to achieve before. So alongside helping run the label, developing five movie projects, as well as my first lead role which starts shooting in June and various other side-projects, I can make music whenever I want without a ticking clock to get stuff done before jumping on the next plane. I also have a baby coming… so yeah… ‘Different World’ is the term that comes to mind when I think of my own life right now.
Turning our attention to your Exclusive Mix, how did you approach this mix and create a flow?
I felt like collecting some music that represents the vibe I’m going for with House Of House – and of course since it’s a new label with not too many tracks out. I did borrow some music from its sister label Smash Deep which has been dropping some serious fire in the last months, along with some tunes I just really dig.
Looking closer at the Exclusive Mix, can you highlight three tracks included and why they stand out to you?
“Pull Me Closer” – my first solo single… I have like 3-4 follow ups ready to go – all taking inspiration from my early Ibiza days and my 90s/80s childhood sounds, but I felt this one was the perfect track to start with.
“Superpowers” by Vintage Culture and Ilkay Sencan. I did an edit on this one which is also dropping on House Of House soon. Love both artists, so I’m happy they picked House Of House for this one.
“Driver’s License.” I think this is real fire in the Dino Warriors vibe and also just released on the label. The project is shrouded in a bit of mystery, but the music is resonating so well so I’m happy we opened the label with a Dino Warriors release. It was the right choice instead of one of my own records.
And as we look ahead, how are you keeping yourself motivated and on track? How have you adjusted the balance and your goals for yourself, for the DVLM duo, and your labels?
As I mentioned earlier, I’m just trying to keep super busy 24/7 and enjoy the projects I’m working on, which is most important. We don’t know how long this new situation will last, but both Mike and I are as hungry as ever to keep pushing our dream forward and making our fans happy and proud. So, we will continue to deliver new music and content to keep everyone entertained until and beyond the shows come back.
