ALPHA 9's Exclusive Mix
In February ARTY released “The Night Is Ours” under his ALPHA 9 alias, his first production under that name in almost seven years. He carried that momentum into March where he debuted his ALPHA 9 show during A State Of Trance at Ultra Music Festival delivering a standout progressive, uplifting trance set packed with new IDs, old classics, and fresh mashups. With so many fans wanting more, he's taken that show on the road and is currently in the midst of his first ALPHA 9 tour. We caught up with ARTY to celebrate and examine his return to his trance roots through his Exclusive Mix & Story.
How did you approach your Exclusive Mix? How does it compare to an ALPHA 9 or ARTY set?
I wouldn't say there is that much of a difference between my Exclusive Mix and my ALPHA 9 set, since this mix really is a reflection of what I'm playing live under the ALPHA 9 moniker.
Can you highlight three tracks that you included in the mix and why they stand out to you?
Tim Mason - “Drifter.” It's really hard to find these kinds of tracks being produced nowadays – dark, powerful, meaningful. I heard this track first when Sander van Doorn played it at Ultra and got totally obsessed with it.
Push - “Strange World” (Andrew Bayer Remix). Not all of the old school fans may accept the remixes for their favorite classics like “Strange World,” but I do believe Andrew Bayer did a perfect job on this one. It’s modern, well-produced, and balanced between the original uplifting vibes and the trance music scene nowadays.
Orbital - “Halcyon” (Tom Middleton Re-Model). Nothing to say here, my favorite track of all time in the Tom Middleton mix.
What was your experience like returning to perform as ALPHA 9 during ASOT at Ultra [full set + tracklist]?
Really surreal, it felt exactly like one of my first big shows at ASOT 500 in Den Bosch back in 2011. This time for Ultra, I was extremely nervous too, cause all of February and March I’ve been working on the new music for ALPHA 9, finished about five records and had no idea how the music was going to be accepted. But it did pay off though! Testing out all of that new stuff in the type of the set that I hadn’t played for six years at one of the biggest dance festivals in the world. Like I said, really surreal.
And what an intro track to start that show! Can you talk to us a little about constructing that intro track and the impression you intended to leave with it?
It was just a random pluck melody idea at first, but there was something special about the vibe, so I decided to work on it more, and came up with the most simple intro where this pluck instrument is playing just one note over and over, and instantly realized that it was the perfect intro for my set.
The productions you’ve released this year under ALPHA 9 have been huge as well – can you talk us through the production process for “The Night Is Ours” going from the initial inspiration to the final track that we hear today?
It was actually made in one day. I really wanted to finish it fast without losing the vibe of the song. When you have these type of chords, they naturally lead you to a specific sound design, like in this track.
What was it like to release a progressive vocal trance track for the first time on Anjunabeats in “Only Good Mistake”? What did you like best about working with Koven?
I’ve been Koven’s fan for a while, I always liked how their music would sound beautiful and powerful at the same time. I got really excited when Katie sent me a direct message showing me their new vocal idea they’d been working on. I loved did, jumped on the track and did my best. The whole process between finishing the track and release took nine months, but it was worth it.
What’re you excited most about with the ALPHA 9 tour shows? If you were to preface your sets to someone coming out on one of those nights, what would you say?
When I played my debut ALPHA 9 show at Ultra, I realized how much I’ve been missing these types of sets. Getting back to my roots, making and playing the music that I grew up on is priceless. There is so much depth you can bring with the progressive/trance style and so many records that I forgot how beautiful they are. I’m putting all of my soul and efforts into this tour and I can’t wait to share the feeling that I have with people that are going to be at these shows.
What’s next on the production front from ALPHA 9 and ARTY? We know you have a lot of nice ALPHA 9 IDs :D!
A lot of new music for both projects, not only does ALPHA 9 have a lot of new IDs, but ARTY too. And the tracks are crazy different. I think I finally found myself in a perfect spot where I can do all types of the music without any limitations whether it's pop, dance or trance.
