1001 Spotlight: SWACQ
All young artists look up to and dream of sharing the stage or a production with an artist like Tiësto. For SWACQ, that dream has now become a reality on regular occurrence. Having just released his fourth collaboration with the King of Dance Music, we talked with SWACQ about their latest hit “Party Time,” premiering the track on stage together during Don’t Let Daddy Know, and more. Turn it loud for his ID filled Spotlight Mix as the future looks bright for this rising star!
Arjen, thanks for joining us today! We’re so excited to be celebrating “Party Time”! In October of 2017 you released your first collaboration with Tiësto, “Sumos,” and in May of 2018, you released your remix together of “Bum Bum Tam Tam.” Can you progress us through your relationship and working partnership from then until now?
Thanks for having me, fun to be back and happy to celebrate “Party Time” with you guys!
Working with a legend like Tiësto has been such an honor and still is! The fact that we already have been working together on four tracks (we also had “Brolab” together with John Christian) proves that hard work pays off! And of course the relationship gets better every time, we text, we see each other and we enjoy some nice drinks together – we’re f*cking EDM bros now, haha. But fun aside, he is always looking for fresh ideas so it’s never an easy job, but that’s what makes him such a good artist!
Take us inside the production process for “Party Time.” What did the initial sketch look like and how did you get to the final production that we hear today?
The production process was a lot of shooting ideas back & forth until we found this weird Zurna lead. That’s where the idea was born. We started by playing around with the lead until we had the one that you can hear now. After, we added some chords underneath and then we came up with the idea to keep those chords only for the second break and just go for the Zurna solo in the first break. Then we added some carnival drums to give the whole sound a more live feeling and also implemented a vocal saying “Party Time” because who doesn’t want to have a party time :P
As for the drop, we started playing around with another lead and after a few tries we had this groovy bassline and added the Zurna as stabs in the drop, and that’s where we thought, “Let’s turn this whole thing around and just drop with the Zurna melody but let’s chop it!” We added some distortion and some subtle synth layers to make the lead in the drop a bit more powerful and also added a short verb to give it a roomy feeling!
In terms of keeping the track interesting, we had to play a lot with FX’s and grooves since we are using the same melody all over the track. It was not easy, but we’re so happy with how this track turned out!
Tell us some more about premiering the track together on stage with Tiësto during DLDK – what a moment!!
What a moment indeed! Dropping “Party Time” for the first time was so exciting! The crowd went totally nuts, it was such a blast to share that moment with Tiësto on stage!
Of all your tracks together with Tiësto, which has been your favorite and why?
Can’t really choose to be honest, since they all have their own stories, but if I HAVE to choose then I would go for “Party Time” when it comes to production. Why? Because I haven’t heard it as much as the other ones so it’s the freshest one to me now haha. But I can’t leave “Sumos” out of this since that’s where our brotherhood started!
Looking deeper at your Spotlight Mix, could you highlight three tracks included and why they stand out to you?
Well there’s an ID - ID which I love so much. It’s simple, yet fresh, and reminds me of the Sneakerz time. I can’t mention anything more though. Listen to the mix and check out the tracklist... maybe some of the users will guess ;)
Ship Wreck - “Soul” is also one of my favorites right now, it’s so weird and groovy. That weird ass phone-ish sound slowing down in the drop is so fresh and freaky, just love it!
Fisher - “Losing It” (Ricky West Remix). Ricky is a good friend of mine who is killing it right now and this remix is freaking dope. Why? Because everyone expects the original and then it flips to something different. I also love how the first part of the drop is the original drop but filtered, people think you fucked up but then they realize it was still part of the buildup.
You’ve done a lot of work with John Christian and with Revealed in the past. Can we expect anything new from you together with John or on Revealed? Any other new music that you can share with us?
Yes new John Christian collabs are coming up and yes Revealed releases are coming up as well! Some have already been dropped here and there, but I can’t really say much about them yet. Keep an eye on my socials (@swacqmusic) to be the first to know!
As we’ve touched on already you’ve worked with some of the best artists and labels in the industry, but who are some artists who you haven’t yet worked with, but hope to soon?
I’ve got a big list haha, but my number one goal in terms of collaborations would be Skrillex. I’ve always had and still have such respect for what he’s doing. Always pushing boundaries and trying to reinvent himself.
Looking ahead, what are a few goals that you want to accomplish by the end of 2019? And in the more short term, what has you most excited for the summer season?
My goals are to get more shows and reach 1 million listeners a month on Spotify! I’m excited to see what the summer holds, looking forward to jumping on stage, and hopefully will see some of you fans joining my sets!
