Bassjackers At Ultra Music Festival
Prior to Bassjackers' closing set Sunday Night at Ultra Music Festival on the Jacked stage, we sat down with Marlon to look at some of the must plays in his set. Recent tracks “Joyryde” with Brooks and the Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike edit of “All Aboard” have been killing it for the guys lately and we were excited to learn more about how those came together. We also got the inside scoop on their brand new track “Wobble & Jiggle” and the exciting news that the guys have an upcoming EP!
What’s your mindset going into tonight’s closing performance on the Jacked stage?
It's super exciting, I think it's a great time slot. I feel like we had a lot of people attending in the Ultra app, so I'm hoping all of them come out. It's Afrojack’s stage, which has a great lineup and was rocking earlier today so we will see what happens – either way we will make it a fun show!
We are sure your big collab “Joyryde” with Brooks will be in your set tonight. Can you tell us the story behind that track?
Ralph was at Brooks’ place browsing through some old melodies and came across this melody that Ralph thought was amazing. So from there Brooks sent us the files, Ralph did the production for it and we wrapped it up together. It was great and we had our follow up to “Alamo” since we always wanted to do something after that. It was fun working together and he is a really talented kid.
Another of your must plays for tonight – the Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike edit of “All Aboard” – can you talk about that one?
In this one Dimitri and Mike did what they usually do with us. They’ll have a great idea, shoot it to us with a little note just like “Yo, we should do this or that.” They had these guys, D'Angelo & Francis, who made this little sketch that wasn’t there yet, but felt it was definitely right in our lane. We listened to it and thought it sounded cool. And then they came up with the theme of doing “All Aboard.”
We did the drops and end production. I definitely think that is where our strength is – the drops and making the track sound really big. Ralph is an evil genius in the studio. He keeps tweaking and tweaking until it sounds perfect. Over the years we have really mastered the art of the big room sound. We can make it sound so powerful and dropping so aggressive, honestly, I think there are only a few guys like Ralph that can create that kind of big room sound.
Any chance we hear “Wobble & Jiggle” tonight? What was it like working on a bit of a different sound for you guys?
Oh you did your research! That is like our Destiny EP last year where we had some trap and future bass and we wanted to try some different stuff again. We went for a little more of a 100 BPM moombahton kind of sound, but still with the same big Bassjackers signature sound. Actually, the track works really well. It's super high energy, the moombahton rhythm kicks in and you see all the girls dancing. It's something different, but we feel it's still true to our sound. I think we will drop it on an EP in May or June.
Any other must plays in your set tonight? Any big IDs we should be on the lookout for?
We have a few other tracks that will probably be on that EP, probably a five tracker with all bangers, that I will probably play, and I did some new edits and mashups.
