Sikdope's Exclusive Mix
Celebrating his brand new single “Follow,” Sikdope joins us with a banging Exclusive Mix loaded both with new IDs and classics. In his interview we take a deeper look at his production prowess including the festival anthem “Snakes,” as well as his DJ sets and big headlining show at 1900 Le Theatre in Hanoi, Vietnam this weekend.
David, thanks for joining us! We’re excited to be celebrating your new single and can’t wait for this Saturday’s event at 1900 in Hanoi – so many exciting things to talk about! Looking first at “Follow” – what was the initial inspiration for the track and how has it evolved into the final production that we hear today?
Thanks for having me! The main inspiration for “Follow” was the female vocal that you can hear in the intro. My manager, Jake, sent me the sample pack with this topline and I immediately fell in love and decided to build a song around it.
The videos of you dropping “Follow” in your sets look massive! Can you talk about how you’ve been using the track in your sets and why you think it works so well?
My sets lately are really energetic. I enjoy playing much more fast-paced tunes and I knew straight up that “Follow” is gonna be a festival smash. I like dropping it mid-set as it gives people time to breathe on the uplifting break leading towards the heavy drop.
Do you have a favorite memory playing the track out?
I remember the first time I ever dropped it at this huge festival in Asia, it was still a draft version which I wanted to test out, but people went crazy and I got tons of DMs asking about the name of the tune.
You’re also launching a remix contest for “Follow.” What advice would you give for any producers getting involved in the contest? What to you makes a good remix?
Be creative, don’t feel obligated to follow any rules. I like all genres and I think that good music is just good music. This generation of producers nowadays is crazy talented and I’m sure there’s going to be tons of amazing submissions!
How were your summer shows?
They were amazing! I’m blessed to work with an amazing agency that allows me to travel worldwide.
This summer “Snakes” has also continued to see regular rotation in DJ sets at festivals worldwide. What does the continued support on that record mean to you? When you were initially producing the track, did you have any indication that you were on to something that would be so massive?
I never expected this tune to get so big! It got turned down by nearly every label until Calvin Harris heard it & signed it to Fly Eye. And that’s what I love about music, you never know what the outcome of a specific track is gonna end up looking like. I pretty much started the draft on a plane coming back from an Asia tour and finished it in like two weeks which is pretty fast considering it usually takes me a month or two to finish a song. The first person who started to support this song was Tiësto, and then pretty much it became the most played song at each festival.
You’ve included some other signature Sikdope productions in your Exclusive Mix – can you talk to us about one or two of them and why they are special to you?
With the mix I made for you, I wanted to showcase how my sound has evolved over the years, so that’s why I included some of my classics + unreleased songs, which can give you an idea of what you can expect from Sikdope “style” in the following weeks.
There’s this one song I played from me called “SOS” and I think that it’s one of the best songs I’ve ever made. Really energetic and heavy, yet it’s melodic and has a really catchy vocal.
This weekend you’re headlining at 1900 Le Theater in Hanoi and we’ll be bringing all of the action to a global audience with your Instagram Takeover. For anyone who might not be familiar, how would you describe your DJ sets and style?
I think the best word to describe my DJ sets is “diverse” with tons of energy. People are usually shocked because they expect me to play, for example, one hour of bass house, yet I’m playing everything in my sets. From bass house, to old school rave, and ending with dubstep and hardstyle. The main goal for me is to make people move and have an amazing time!
How would you describe your experiences playing in Asia?
I instantly fell in love with Asia during my first visit a couple of years ago. I love everything about it, the culture, the food, the people. I’m so happy to see how rapidly the scene is growing, and I can easily say that it’s one of my biggest markets now.
And as we turn our attention to this weekend, what has you most excited for the show at 1900?
The crowd and pho after my set! Last time I played there, the promoters took me to get some street food and it was delicious, best way to end after a party!
