Charlie Ray's Exclusive Mix
2017 has a been a big year for Charlie Ray. He’s seen breakthrough releases on Revealed and WALL, and he also embarked on his debut Asia tours. With plenty of new music on the horizon and a successful ADE under his belt, we caught up with Charlie to discuss the bright future ahead!
How did you approach your Exclusive Mix and how does your track selection compare to your club sets currently?
I approached my Exclusive Mix with a couple of goals in mind. I wanted the mix to be diverse, but also to have my signature Charlie Ray vibes. I think I managed to pull it off, with a variety of older tracks, tracks that people may have never heard of and some new IDs. I think the mix is pretty comparable to what I would play live, although I approach every show a bit different. Different countries mean people like different things and I bring that into account as well.
Can you highlight three artists included in your Mix and why they stand out to you?
Brooks, Teamworx and Klahr have been killing it for me. Their music is completely different from others, but so inspirational. Truly pioneers in their own directions and that’s why I put all three of them in my mix. “Boomerang,” “Champion Sound” and the new “HDYFRN” remix from Klahr were pretty much ‘no brainers’ to put in. I am sure these guys will be around for the long haul.
Last month was marked by one of the biggest dance music events, ADE. Can you talk a little about your experience there this year and connecting with fellow artists, fans, and industry professionals?
This year’s ADE was actually the first ADE for me where I tried to do a little bit of everything – both business and pleasure if you will. Overall ADE is very inspiring. All of these people are doing the same thing as you and everyone is very passionate about it.
I met so many fans at the Revealed event and it’s just amazing to see what kind of fanbase you build up over the years. Honestly you never actually realize it to the full extent until you do something like go to a label event during ADE. It makes me want to do better and better! It’s also always good to see your fellow friends and artists that you usually talk with on the internet. That never gets old.
This year you played your first shows in Asia. What was playing there like for you? What makes those crowds special relative to the Dutch scene and crowd you’ve grown up with?
Asia is another world! People are so grateful, humble and passionate. They go crazy to almost anything haha! I loved playing there, the cities breathe a different culture and I love it. Maybe that is why we all like it so much there, it’s not comparable to any city in Europe. I feel like Dutch crowds are not impressed as much by the DJs anymore as much as the Asian crowds. I think that’s why there is a different energy sometimes. Playing a show in your own country always feels like playing at home though, which is also nice!
You’ve been quiet on the release front lately, so can you let us in on any of the new music you’ve been working on?
Well I finished quite a few tracks but I do want them on the right labels and that can be difficult sometimes. I take a lot of time on my records not only because I’m in law school, but also because I want to make sure I believe in the tracks myself. If I’m not 100% satisfied I won’t release it. Of course then the label has to like it too haha!
I have signed a couple tracks now so you can expect some new music soon. And more music is in the works so you will definitely see more Charlie Ray music to finish this year and 2018!
What are some of your personal goals for 2018? What else does the future hold in store for you?
My personal goals will be playing the two big festivals – Ultra and Tomorrowland. Another personal goal would be having three releases on major labels since 2017 brought me two big releases (“Karma” on WALL and “Nova” on Revealed). We are working on a lot of new shows as well and we’re planning a new Asia tour for January/February so keep an eye on my socials for that!
