On The Rise: Mister Ruiz

Brazilian DJ and producer Mister Ruiz has been busy in the studio during Covid. He's used the time to hone his sound and the results have been paying off for him in 2021 with a huge string of releases. His latest is a collaboration titled "Feel Only Love" with one of his musical inspirations, Klaas, and he joins us to tell us about the new collaboration and much more in our extensive interview!

Hey Mister Ruiz, thanks for joining us today! Can you please introduce yourself and tell us the story of how the Mister Ruiz project came to life?
My name is Abelardo Ruiz, aka Mister Ruiz. I am a DJ and music producer at the age of 24 and I have a long history with music. My productions move through different genres of house music and express all of my passion for electronic music.

Music has always been present in my life. At a very young age, my mother hired a private music teacher. Years later I started frequenting festivals like Tomorrowland in Belgium and Ultra Music Festival in Miami. All of this awakened my passion even more. Until one day when I asked myself, why not become a DJ/producer?

Take us all the way back to the start of your interest in music. Who were some of your early musical inspirations, and what made you want to pursue a career in music?
My early musical inspirations were Calvin Harris, Avicii and David Guetta. I started playing in my home city and people really liked my music. And then meanwhile my productions got to a great level. Both of these factors encouraged me to pursue a career in music.

In your first year of the Mister Ruiz project, what have been some of the milestone moments and highlights for you?
Definitely releasing my last three tracks – "Dreaming In Circles," "Air In My Lungs," and "Talk To Each Other."

How has the Covid situation affected you musically and personally? Have you had more time to devote to the studio and establish a routine for the project?
I used to be away from home very frequently. After Covid I started focusing more on meditation. My mind became a lot more creative. I was able to spend a lot more time in the studio trying new ideas and producing new tracks.

As you mentioned, you've recently released a few huge tracks with "Dreaming In Circles," "Air In My Lungs," and "Talk To Each Other." Can you talk to us about the production process for these tracks and tell us the idea behind them and how they came to life?
"Dreaming in Circles": I started with the melody and then with the chord progression. I found a really cool sequence and then I spoke with the vocalist about what I wanted for this track. He sent me a wonderful vocal. The lyrics were composed after a very remarkable dream I had and then it repeated. The idea of dreaming in circles was really cool and inspired the song and video.

"Air In My Lungs": I started with the melody and then made the chords progressions. The rattle is a very striking percussive element throughout the song. A piano making the music more danceable. A synth/bass in the buildup and in the drop with a lead doing a counter melody.

"Talk To Each Other": I started with the introduction, where I used a pad with a very strong tone. I set up the chord progression and ended up emphasizing the vocal's lower timbre. It resulted in a very pop sound that you can listen to anywhere.

All of your releases also have a music video to complement them! Can you pick your favorite music video so far and tell us about why this one stands out the most to you?
"Dreaming In Circles" really stands out to me. The music video brought the message of the song title itself – (circles) loops where multiple takes are repeated. The takes are very much like a dream. The video unifies the distortion of time perception where we don't know if we are in the past, present or future.

You've also just released a really exciting collaboration with German artist Klaas! How did the two of you come to work together on "Feel Only Love"?
You know those things that only happen to shrewd people? Klaas has always been a musical reference, his remix for "Infinity" by Guru Josh is an extremely special song in my life. As a regular fan, I contacted Klass via Instagram, and the rest is history.

And lastly, as we look ahead to the second year of the Mister Ruiz project, what does the future look like for you and what goals do you have for yourself?
I want to play all of the music made during the Covid period to a huge crowd and continue focusing on my productions.
