Michael Brun has spent the last three years working on his debut album, LOKAL, and the project showcases everything he loves about Haiti's sounds and culture. When you listen to the music, Michael talking about the album, or even just his comments on social media, you can’t help but feel his immense amount of passion for the LOKAL project shining through. Turn it up and dive deeper into the Haitain roots of Michael’s global sound with his LOKAL Exclusive Mix!!
Hi Michael, good to have you with us today! How’s your year going?
Good to catch up! This year has been incredible. The Bayo Tour sold out across North America and I brought out some really amazing guests from around the world including Major Lazer, Mr Eazi, Maxwell and a bunch more. I also wrapped my debut album and I’m so hyped about it. I can’t wait for the world to hear it.
For someone who hasn’t heard your music or is unfamiliar with your background, how would you describe your music currently?
I really see it as global music. It’s a combination of Haitian and Caribbean sounds, merged with afrobeat and hip hop, and elements of electronic music in the production.
Talk to us some more about diving deeper into your Haitian roots with your music and your ability to bring a global spotlight to not just the music, but also Haitian artists, history, and culture.
I’ve spent the past few years working on community, art and educational projects around Haiti, and always try my best to incorporate those values into my music. I genuinely believe that when you uplift and nurture your community, you grow as a person and as an artist and create better art.
You’ve got your brand new album LOKAL out now and we have so many great things to say about it! But first, introduce us to the concept of the album and the story you’re telling with it.
LOKAL is a mosaic of all the sounds and stories that I grew up with in Haiti. I felt like people around the world know what Jamaican music is, or Latin music, but so few people know the sounds of my country, despite it being such an influential part of the Western Hemisphere. I wanted to change that with the album and create a project that represented the best of Haiti.
You’ve got many special collaborations on the album, from the likes of Major Lazer, Mr. Eazi, and even your own brother! What was it like working with so many different people from different backgrounds on LOKAL?
The one word that comes to mind is natural. All of these collaborations were with artists that I really admired, and I learned so much about what it means to be an artist along the way. I also picked artists that I felt really connected with my music or Haitian culture in some way.
What are three highlight tracks included in your Exclusive Mix and why do they stand out to you?
I would say “Kale,” “Shaku Shaku” and “Ede M Chante.”
“Kale” because it’s the perfect representation of Haitian street sounds in my opinion, and it was such an honor working together with Diplo to make it a reality.
“Shaku Shaku” because I think GQOM sounds and rhythms are so different from anything I had ever heard in my life, and really made me rethink my own productions and sounds.
“Ede M Chante” because I have opened all of my shows with it for the past year. It’s like the beginning of a ceremony and I think it really takes you to a special place spiritually. I’m also so hyped that I got Larry Heard’s blessing on the song.
Can you tell us a little bit more about what you feel is the best way to present your album music live?
Definitely coming to a Bayo show or one of my DJ sets. The music is eclectic so I love bringing out live performers and guests throughout my performances.
What’s next for the Michael Brun project in terms of music? Will you be releasing more club tracks next? Or explore a new genre?
Global music. I’ve been so grateful to get to work with some of the best artists from around the world over these last few months, and I think people will be happy about what comes next.
