Plastik Funk's Exclusive Mix
We are excited to present longtime DJ/producer duo Plastik Funk’s Exclusive Mix and Story. While they may be best known for their hit collaboration with Tujamo, “Dr. Who!,” the duo have had a big 2016 filled with worldwide touring and a stream of steady, quality releases on Armada. In their story, the duo joined us to reflect on their busy year, talk about their recent release of “Ever,” and look ahead to their upcoming productions.
Can you talk about your recent track, “Ever,” which was released on Armada?
This track was actually just meant to be a DJ tool. We started with some beats and we were tweaking some sounds trying to get it right. The result was more of a song, and we decided that we needed a vocal on this one. Normally we just give the track to a songwriter, singer, or a friend who knows how to work with vocals. But this time we just searched through some samples, found some that we liked and chopped them up. We love how it came out and it sounds special. It was a good time to do something different and we’re happy with the result.
What’s upcoming for you music wise?
We have our next release on Armada in December called “Sunrise.” It’s a full vocal track, and we have a club mix which will be released on Armada Trice. The radio and extended versions will be released in January on Armada Deep. We also just finished a remix for a project called CDA and two collabs which will hopefully be released on early 2017.
Sounds like you have a lot going on. And you’re also in the midst of a hectic touring schedule?
Yes. 2016 was one of the craziest ever for us. In July and August alone, we played 55 shows all over the world. It was a great time though. We had our residency in Ibiza and we were touring in Asia and America. It was a really good summer. And now it continues like that.
Any highlights or favorite venues that you played this year?
Oh yes. Privilege in Ibiza was our home where we had a residency on Tuesdays. It’s always about 4,000-5,000 people, so it’s like playing a festival every Tuesday. We played many festivals, and love that Germany is catching up. Parookaville, which is close to our hometown, is a good competitor for Tomorrowland. It’s smaller, but has a similar feel.
Ultra Europe was great as well and we had a residency at Noa in Croatia. That club is really one of our favorites in the world. If you ever have the chance to go to Croatia, it’s really worth it. We say that it’s the new Ibiza. You get more for your money and the parties are at least the same. People are really nice, the food’s amazing – it’s the perfect place for a nice holiday. Ibiza is our second home and we love it, but it’s super expensive. In Croatia, you can have a great time with the biggest DJs in the world and the best clubs in the world much more affordably.
How was your ADE?
ADE is always great. It’s not far from us, about two hours away by car. We meet all of the people that we’re dealing with across the world, and for us it’s perfect.
What does the rest of this year and beginning of next year look like for you guys?
We went back to our roots with house music in the beginning of 2016. The whole branding and musical direction is really on the right way right now, so we just have to follow this path. We have one of the best partners in the world with Armada and signed a label deal with them for next year. We’re working on a compilation series which will be coming out through Armada as well. We tried to give the sound that we make a name. We like to say it’s ‘happy house,’ but that sounds old, like ‘happy hardcore.’ So we decided to call it ‘bliss house’ and name the compilation House Of Bliss. We just want to keep it in the happy direction with the summer vibe. We say it’s music for the girls [laughs].
