Jewelz & Sparks Exclusive Mix
Jewelz & Sparks step up with a monster Exclusive Mix to celebrate one of the tracks of summer, “Bring It Back.” Out now on Wall Recordings, their massive collaboration with Afrojack and Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano will be taking over festival stages worldwide this summer! Read on to get an inside look at the track, their work with Afrojack, and unreleased Jewelz & Sparks music!
Julius, Gregor, thanks for joining us today! We’re so excited for your music as you’re currently having your tunes (both released and unreleased) played up and down by a variety of artists on the biggest stages including Ultra! Could you give us a little backstory to the music that you’ve been working?
Julius: Yo guys, thanks for having us! It‘s always a pleasure. As you know we are big fans of your service and we use it ourselves a lot. We actually checked your page shortly after Ultra and we were super excited to see that our track “Hard” was one of the most played tracks. With this track we wanted to go back to our roots. A simple Idea and a minimalistic approach – easy to understand and very energetic. But still with great attention for sound detail and a very punchy, in your face mix. I think I just summed up our recipe pretty well. Hahaha!
Another one of those big tunes is your massive collaboration together with Afrojack and Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano. While we know about your close work with Afrojack and Wall, tell us some more about working with Sunnery & Ryan and how the track has found a good balance between all of your sounds.
Gregor: We first met Sunnery & Ryan at Ultra Beach in Hvar, Croatia when they took the stage after us. We always loved their groovy sound and positive vibes, so when we had an idea for a song and vocal but were still missing the groovy element, we approached them to finish the record together.
We all felt like we needed to bring the groove back into dance music, to move away a little from the stomping EDM records that lack rhythm sometimes. So now, the track is hard hitting (JS) and tribal/groovy (SJ & RM) with a nice bleepy touch from Afrojack, who came into the studio too to round it all up!
It’s been quite a long wait for the release, with Afrojack playing “Bring It Back” as early as last summer during Ultra Europe. What was the build like to the release through your eyes? What’s your preference on releasing music – get it out there right away when you want to or try and really build it up?
Julius: In the beginning of our career we were very impatient. We always wanted to get everything out as fast as possible. Now we are a bit more relaxed and we want to make sure that every single detail is right before the track is called final.
The track was played on the Mainstage at Ultra not only by Afrojack and Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, but also The Chainsmokers [check the video below]. What was your reaction when you saw that they dropped it? What do you think makes the track so accessible for other DJs?
Gregor: We always try to come back to our long experience that comes from DJing for more than 10 years ourselves. So we want to create arrangements that work and still keep the energy up at all times. Also DJs like to play records these days that they can easily combine with others as a mashup.
We know you have some big unreleased music that’s been dropped during Ultra as well, can you tell us any more about that?
Julius: Sorry! Not really haha. There were some IDs for sure and we will certainly try to release all of them this summer. Just keep an eye on our socials. Also you can hear them at all of our shows so we hope to play them for you live ;) We are so excited for all of the new music coming out soon.
You’ve been working very closely with Afrojack now, so can you tell us some more about how that relationship has developed and some of the things you feel Nick has helped teach/show you best?
Gregor: Nick is a fabulous mentor. He has so much experience and whenever we are stuck with a production he gives us amazing input. We teamed up towards the end of 2017 when we worked together on our record “One More Day.” We still love that one and also Nicky Romero's great remix of it. We just sent some demos and song ideas to Afrojack via email. No big deal we thought, but he instantly called us on the phone and invited us to the studio for some sessions. A few months later we became part of the team and we're working very closely on so much exciting stuff now!
Looking deeper at your Exclusive Mix, could you highlight two tracks included and why they stand out to you?
Julius: Rebuke - “Along Came Polly.” This is such a cool track. It reminds us of raves in Germany that we attended back in the days.
Laidback Luke & Jewelz & Sparks - “We Are One.” There is such a nice story behind this track. Luke and I first met all the way back in 2004. I was a showcase scratch DJ at a pop music convention in Berlin. He was there too, giving out vinyl records from one of his first Mixmash releases. He loved my scratching and we chatted for a while. 14 years later we made the first collaboration track, which is “We Are One.”
As we head closer to the summer season, what are a few things that have you most excited?
Gregor: We are looking forward to the great weather and the many festivals that we’re going to play. Keep an eye on our tour calendar and our Instagram story for that. As we played many shows in Asia in the past year we are excited to have many shows in Europe again in 2019. Also we love how many DJs are playing more groovy percussive stuff. That’s totally our thing but we want to keep it hard hitting at the same time… as we always do! Hope you guys enjoy our mix. Big love ;)
