How did you approach your Exclusive Mix and how does the track selection compare to your live sets at the moment?
When playing live it's more about feeling the crowd and being in that moment, always being ready to throw in something unexpected. When recording a set like this, it's more planning involved naturally.
Focusing in on the Our Nation album, what time period of work does the album represent?
I guess we've been working on this album on and off for one to two years now. It's not that long, because when we really had the inspiration we worked really fast.
Can you talk about the motivation to release an album in a time where tracks are normally released as singles or EPs?
Why make an album? Because we want to. We don't care about trends or what the 'market' expects or whatever. We just do what we want to do.
What do you think ties the tracks together and makes them unified as album tracks?
The sound. And also the lyrics. The lyrics are really important to us. These, naturally, are about Our Nation.
Can you pick out three tracks from the album and tell us about the inspiration/production process that went into them? How did you go from the idea/sketch to the final version for these tracks?
If we only remembered... Ok, we'll try.
“Higher Than The Sun” started as a 'normal' acid house song, but then we slowed it down, made it a bit groovier and wrote a vocal melody on top. Finally we added wide vocal harmonies that make you want to roll down the window and just drive towards the horizon.
With “Headless Hobby Horse,” we just aimed at doing dark techno, and that's pretty much what it is too. We made an edit first that goes up and down more, and juxtaposed the melody with the drums, but in the end we scrapped that one and went for a more traditional structure.
For “World Can Burn,” we actually sat down at the piano and wrote the chords, and when they sounded right we got them down and recorded with an analog synth. That's still the main chords of the song.
Which album track do you enjoy playing most in your sets and why?
“Sunday Fuck You Too.” We're just happy with the whole feeling of that one.
Can you tell us a little more about the meaning and message behind the three part animated short story you guys made to accompany the album?
We have animated content on our live shows and we've been wanting to do something in a music video format too, and this was the perfect fit. Three parts that go with the idea of Our Nation.
What should people expect from your Our Nation tour?
They should expect the same as all Dada Life shows: to arrive beautiful and leave ugly!
