Vigel's Exclusive Mix

Vigel is celebrating his brand new single “Hear This Sound” in his Exclusive Mix & Interview! The massive track featuring Eric Lumiere is another standout production from the talented Russian producer, whose music already features prominently in the sets of Armin van Buuren and many other major DJs, and we got an inside look into his exciting world!

How did you approach your Exclusive Mix and how does the track selection compare to your live sets at the moment?
It’s pretty close to my live sets, but not in every aspect. You know, when I do guest mixes, I’m always trying to imagine someone who’d be up for listening to them. Maybe it’s just some random guy in a gym, or maybe it’s just a student after his classes. You always need to understand the main thing – they’re not in the club or at the festival. That is why my set can be very different, much harder, when I’m actually playing at some venue. However, in the end, it’s all about how the crowd responds as I’m always trying to see people's reactions to understand what I should play next. I’m also trying to not be a prisoner of one style or genre to combine as many different tunes as possible to make my set interesting.

Can you highlight three tracks or artists included in the mix and why they stand out to you?
Vigel – “Children.” It was a big honor to make my own version of a well known classic by Robert Miles. It became the hardest track to make in my whole career because of the responsibility on my shoulders to all of Robert’s fans. Everyone knows that it’s always pretty dangerous to rework a classic melody, so I tried a different approach – not just to remix, but to give it its own feeling. 23 versions of the track later, and here it is – the final result. To be honest, I've been surprised by the great response and support of the tune. Sadly, Robert suddenly passed away just one week after we had released it with Armada. It was a big shock to me, and I wrote a big message on my socials to all of the music lovers about how unfair and unpredictable life can be. Now I’m thinking of this track as a tribute to spread the great memory of the legend.

Mike Hawkins – “Crocodile.” I'm such a big fan of this record. It just blows my mind every time I’m listening to it. Very nice combination of his old style and something new/fresh with an incredibly catchy groove.

Protoculture – “Pegasus” (Vigel Remix). Even a year after releasing this tune, it’s still present in every Armin van Buuren set. Amazing melody by Protoculture inflated with my synths. I’m also playing this one at every gig of my own, always getting a great reaction from the crowd.

You’ve got a massive new single out with Eric Lumiere! What does it mean to you to get the opportunity to work with Eric? Do you remember the first track of his that left a big impression on you?
Thank you for such kind words! I’ve always been a big fan of Eric's voice, and it was a big pleasure to work on the track together. Well, speaking of the first impression… I’m an absolute fan of his record “Falling Back” with Cosmic Gate as well as his collab with Andrew Rayel called “I’ll be There”! I also think that “Hear The Sound” won't be the last track for us together, so let’s see :)

What was the initial inspiration for your track together? How did Eric’s vocal influence the production’s direction?
I asked for some vocal demos from Eric’s side, and he sent two great toplines for me to choose from. “Hear The Sound” was closer to my music in terms of the mood, so I decided to work on this one. Later I sent the first demo of the track to Eric, and he responded with feedback and some of his thoughts on how we could improve it to make it really special. Building on this, we eventually created the final version. I love it when both sides are involved in the process and are interested in making a good product that they could be proud of. That’s what I call a collaboration.

How do you see the track fitting into your sets?
I see it as a sort of anthem. You know, sometimes you just hesitate to play something with vocals in your set. You're afraid of losing that energy of instrumental bangers. But the thing is, sometimes crowds need something like this, moments when they can sing along with you, so you don’t need to be so afraid. I had a gig in Colosseum in Jakarta (Indonesia) once, and I ended up not playing one of my tracks called “I’ll Be Waiting” because I was unsure if it would fit into my set very well. After my performance, one guy came up to me and said, “Hey buddy, thanks for an amazing set, but I was so stoked to hear your “Waiting” track. You should play it in your sets.” It changed my mind so I thought to myself: really, if people are asking me, why shouldn’t I play this? And I believe it's quite the same with “Hear The Sound.” I’ll definitely keep playing this one in my sets too.

Earlier last month you put your incredible “Resurrected” edit online. Can you tell us a bit more about how you came up with the idea for that edit and how it’s been working in your sets?
Thank you! This version contains the original “Resurrected” – my collaboration with First State released not so long ago, plus the first version of the track we did with Sander using the well known “Resurrection” melody from PPK on top, which we weren't able to clear the rights to for the release unfortunately. I tried playing both versions in my sets, but this edit just sounds special for electronic fans because of the well known melody. That’s why I decided to share it with the listeners as a free download.

And as we move towards summer what has you particularly excited?
I’m excited to finally see the sunlight, as I’m living in a snowy Moscow region and it’s cold all the time :D Kidding, of course I’m excited for the summer festival season as I’m scheduling new tour dates at the moment. I'm also excited to share all of the new music that I've been working on. Stay tuned and follow me on my socials so you don’t miss anything.
